Taps

Couldn't find the remote yesterday and ended up watching Garden of Stone. Good movie, never saw it before. There were several scenes with military funerals and Taps, which got me thinking of military funerals that I've seen/participated in over the years and Taps. And things I can't remember and am hoping some of our forum history buffs might know...@Ken King, @GURPS

the National Anthem is played in the morning on I assume most military bases I think. Been awhile since I've been on one at 0800.

Is Taps played in the evening on bases? If it is what are the notes played after Taps and what is it called? I know I've heard that before and it's not part of Taps - Taps is 24 notes. These notes are after Taps like some kind of fancy separate ending or something.

Anyone know?

This sounds more like charge at a football game. Taps as the end of the day sounds appropriate, it's a peaceful sound, charge sounds more like it wants to wake you up and wouldn't make sense after Taps.

Anyone know?
When not moored at a military base, my first ship would play To the Color in the morning (0800), and Taps at sunset. The bouy tender would blow a whistle and announce 'Attention to Colors' over the 1MC.

Hmm been 40 yrs since I was in,

Reveille, Retreat & Taps

Reveille

Sounded at bases around the world at sunrise, Reveille signals the beginning of the duty day and is a cue for service members to assemble for a morning roll call. Reveille is accompanied by the raising of the base’s colors and the U.S. flag, during which service members are required to stand at attention and face the colors and flag, if visible. If the flag is not within sight, they are to face the direction of the music. If reveille is followed by playing of the national anthem orTo the Colors,” service members should salute for the duration of the song.

ah yes ... to the colors, never knew the name

Nope. That's not the right one. It's just a handful of notes, extremely short that I can hear it my head and sing but cannot correctly describe. Not hearing things, Lee's the one who started this conversation like two years ago and we still haven't found the answer.

Thank you for responding though, appreciate it.

Pretty cool. Taps, apparently has no official lyrics, but the one I'm familiar it pretty poignant to both funerals and the end of the day.

Living outside of Webster, yes, I'm blessed to here both every day.

I'm about a mile from Webster. What time do they play Taps, not sure I've ever heard it.

Years and years ago, there was an eagle sitting out in the cow pasture next to my home. I watched him for a few minutes and he was just perched there no movement. When The National Anthem started; he flew off.

Impeccable timing.

It's not taps, it's the lowering of colors at sunset. Forget what the tune's name is. Would have loved to have seen what you did!

Correction: Retreat was played when the flag was lowered at sunset.

It was a really nice moment. I don't see eagles on a regular basis here, so when I do, I stop and watch until I can't see them anymore. They're pretty fascinating. l caught one once on the edge of a field near the road on Trapp, eating something that was freshly dead. I parked there for ten minutes just a few feet away and watched it tear the carcass about with his beak. It was like watching something out of the Jurrasic Park movie up close and personal.
