Weather, food, balance of nature and 'civilized' stuff, population density, cool to visit? What's life like there to American sensibilities?
I'll ask a guy in my office for specifics when he gets back from vacation. I believe he's from "Tassie".
Obviously the seasons are flipped from us, so it's winter there right now. I think it's comparable to MD in terms of distinct seasons, but not such wide swings of temperatures. Max is about 80*, min is about 40*. It depends where you are. Rainfall is about the same as here in MD.
Aussies are big on "green" stuff. Tons of athletic things to do, tons of parks, "green" buildings. Tasmania is almost half protected natural areas, so there's plenty of nature. Very concentrated around cities, and not much beyond that I believe.
With all that vast land in the middle, density is almost 19 people per sq. mi. For a comparison, MD's density is 618.7 sq. mi. Idaho has 20 people per sq. mi.
Not much to do in Tasmania out side of the big cities that isn't related to nature, but there's tons of islands surrounding it and it's not far from (obviously) the mainland Australia where there's plenty to do. Hobart is similar to Baltimore. An old waterfront town with a bunch of old warehouses converted to apartments. The Port Arthur (another tourist spot) massacre was in Tasmania so you won't find many gun enthusiasts around though Tasmania typically has a higher pro-gun crowd. I've only met one Aussie with a gun and he was a farmer who duck hunted (but still didn't quite understand our gun laws).
Life's, in my opinion, a bit slower there. Tons of Asian tourists (much like DC). Our offices have fridges stocked with beer for employees to drink after work. Meetings tend to involve a few beers also.
Not sure if Tasmania is a big a fan as Australia of Vegemite, but stay away from that nasty ####. I don't know how that eat that.
