I did my taxes, went to e-file, and was rejected. Turns out my wife's last name doesn't match the records of IRS. IRS, somehow, got her last name spelled twice (like smithsmith instead of smith)!! They say it most be wrong with SSN, so we called SSN and they have it correct. Each agency blames it on the other. The last IRS lady said it wasn't really IRS's problem but mine and then hung up on me. A tad rude, I thought.
I know I can have her sign the paper version and then mail it in, but that will take forever. The other bug-a-boo is that because my wife isn't from the uS (we got married last year) when we went last year to change her family name to mine, SSN said 'no - we have to check her immigration status first'. They never did change her family name. But I have papers from immigration saying she is waiting for her green card. None of it makes sense - before we got married, we marched in and she got a SSN and card on her K-1. Right after we got married, we marched in and they said she was 'out of status' as her K-1 was no longer valid... no kidding, we got married! Duh! A change of status, hence green card, takes more than a year often. Of course, they took her SSN card when we attempted to change her name so she has a letterand SSN but no card. Still, this shouldn't have effected our taxes as SS has her old last name correct in its data banks...
advise?
