My wife is a teacher and has received a similar complaint about her taking time off. My wife has had to take the time off because our son has been sick on and off, and the daycare won't take him within 24 hours of having a fever/vomiting. Occasionally she has to take off for personal/health reasons as well. Sometimes I take off too but it is financially beneficial to our family for her to take off when our son is sick. Teachers get a week or so worth of PTO. Given that our public school teacher's salary is garbage compared to other developed nations, when they exceed their PTO they are probably taking off for a good reason.

If you feel that your child is not receiving proper education then it is your responsibility to supplement that education on your own. If you don't feel that the substitute teacher is contributing enough to your child's education then you must make up the difference, as any responsible parent would. Teachers aren't your personal servants. They have lives, and needs just like you do. Far too many people in this country have a difficult time dealing with this. Instead of taking the time to complain on the internet, or taking the time to make phone calls, use that time to further your child's education as you see fit.

Police officers aren't my personal servants either. They are paid officials of the public... as are public school teachers.

So according to this logic, if a police officer takes the day off because they are sick, have problems, or need to go shopping, I should throw on the ole' bullet proof vest and holster and patrol LP?

I know that if I called in sick and my boss caught me out shopping.........

being a teacher and complaining about being around brats is kind of like a mechanic doing his job and complaining about getting grease on his hands. Teachers should be aware of, A, the salary limitations, and B, that they have to deal with immature whatever age kids and figure out how to reign them in.

My son's teachers always scheduled the IEP meetings when they were not in class and he's been in 3 different schools. :shrug:

In my experience, teachers have no control at all over the time of IEP meetings. They are scheduled by an IEP facilitator, and involve a team of people which varies based on a student's disability. The teacher, like all members of the team, is just told when to arrive. The meetings ALWAYS accommodate the parents' schedules, which do not necessarily coincide with teacher planning times. Also, these meetings always involve a variety of special educators and general educators - and it can't possibly be everyone's planning time at once.

You are actually comparing a parent teaching their children to walking around, armed enforcing laws? No, that is not the same logic, it is not even close.
When I call out I don't give a reason why. I just say I'm not coming in today. Why? Because it's none of my bosses business. If I have a PTO day, I use it, if I don't get paid if I come in. I don't get paid. Taking extended time off might warrant a reason though.

After more absences last month and this month I have more concerns. She even told the class on Feb 14 she would be out on the 15th so she could celebrate Valentine's Day with her husband. Whatever. But I'm now informed that the class is well behind where they should be at this point of the year. And 2 days out last week.
