Teacher's absence in St. Mary's Co?????

My daughter has had several substitute teachers throughout the years. Most recently was just a few weeks back when her regular teacher went into labor early. You know what? My daughter is in mostly honors classes and has been for many years of her education. I don't give a #### about a substitute teacher or a teacher with a masters degree.
Lets see the number of days she had a sub and if it was for a day here or there.

The teacher going out on labor can be replaced by another teacher since it will be an extended leave for the regular teacher.

I swear it sounds like some of y'all know this teacher personally. Again, if my child were in a class and the regular teacher was out consistently, I'd be raising hell too. You may settle for a sub-par education but I wouldn't.

Who said anything about getting a sub par education? Is the child passing? Is the child getting good grades?

My daughter has come across both good and bad teachers. At the end of the day, it's my daughter who has to decide how she wants to handle her schoolwork, study for tests, ask for extra credit, volunteer, etc. A teacher is there to assist.

Aren't you having a baby? Do you want your child's teacher off that often when they are supposed to be there teaching your child? You ok with your kid getting an education from a substitute teacher?

You damn right I'd keep track of my kid's teacher. As should any responsible parent.
I think people have a lot of unrealistic expectations about what they think they deserve or have the right to know about others. If she had concerns, they correct thing to do would be to say "Dear principal, I have been concerned about teacher's absences." The principal would know why the teacher was out and would know whether it was a problem or not. Whether the teacher is ice skating for fun or her days off or has a legitimate reason to be out might never be disclosed to the parent, but the principal could take action if necessary. Just because the principal doesn't give you someone's life information doesn't mean they haven't taken your concern seriously.

People especially think they deserve to know more about their teachers, than it seems other professions. People don't have more right to know about why a teacher is out, than any other profession. Maybe we should just shove GPS chips in them so we can know what they are doing at all times.

I don't know why the teacher is out, so I am not going to get crazy over it. Maybe she has a child who is sick. Maybe she is sick and has treatments she has to receive. In which case I can have a little compassion.

Also, just because there is a substitute doesn't mean that no learning is going on. That would depend on the teacher and the substitute.

No. At the end of each week.
So, basically, she's not trying to hide anything? My guess is, if she had anything to hide, she wouldn't indicate on a calendar that she was off on certain days. What will probably happen is you'll get a letter saying that it has been looked into, and she has done nothing inappropriate.

You do that, snitch. I hope one day someone returns the favor.
Wow really Chasey?

I just see her concerned about her kid.

We all b&m about parents not being involved in their kids lives and leaving it up to the school to parent...so when a parent is involved, concerned and parenting, shouldn't we all be supportive?

If it's normal for a teacher to be taking this time, then the BOE will shrug and ignore it. After all, aren't teachers union? And if it isn't normal or is excessive and was somebody who is slipping throught the cracks and skating through their job, then shouldn't that teacher receive some kind of disciplinary action?

Our taxes pay for the teachers, the schools, the administrators, etc. I don't have kids, but I want the best for my money and I want well educated kids.

I'm lucky to know many parents, such as yourself Chasey, who have intelligent well mannered future members of society. However, I think that comes from an involved and caring parent.

You may not know what actions may be happening behind closed doors. It's a personnel matter and I am fairly certain that they cannot "report back" to you and the other parents with details.

No, a teacher is there to TEACH. If a sub is there and not teaching, then any kid could pass since the work issued is sub-par.

If your daughter is not being given the proper work and instruction, how is she getting a good education?

There is a reason why substitutes are "substitutes" and not teachers.

Wow really Chasey?
Yes, really! To take this to the BOE first, and not discuss things with the individual teacher or school is going too far IMO. I'm all for being involved in your child's education, but I also know when to step back. Get the facts FIRST and then decide what course of action to take.

:bs: I personally know teachers with decades in the profession that "lounge" all summer and have done it their entire careers.
and I personally know teachers that work their butts off all summer to take classes, attend conferences and prepare lesson plans. they also catch up on all the appointments they didn't make during the school year to avoid parents ranting and raving because they took too many days off.

I hope your attitude changes before your child gets into school. I most certainly would want to know all about my teachers when it comes to their work ethic and education.

For all you know, Charlie the janitor could be teaching your kid and you wouldn't have a clue since your attitude is "I don't have a right to know anything about who is teaching my child."

And they are great teachers.

Everyone knows that teachers get 2.5 months off every summer. Some elect to further their education while others take advantage of the free time to relax and play.

Doing the latter does not mean they won't stay in the profession very long at all as is documented to the contrary.

And Huntr, teachers pay is NOT reduced. They have an annual salary. They know what it is going in. It is for the 9.5 months they work and is spread out over the entire year.
You just said what I said, using different words.

you have a right to know that your child's teacher is qualified and is working up to the standards of the school and board of ed. you do not have the right to know what the teacher does on their time off, so long as they are not doing anything illegal. If the teacher has leave that has been approved by the school that is their personal business.
