Being a "lurker" for quite awhile, I haven't had a chance to read all the threads posted all these long years, so bare w/me.
Inquiry:
Some dear friends are going through the "I want to get my learners permit" blues w/their youngin. :yikes:
Of course I cringe, puke and run screamin in the night at the mere thought of this amped up kid behind the wheel of ANYTHING.
Any sage advice from y'all would be greatly appreciated!
I did share my humble opinion, #1. teach the kid to take his pluckin foot off the accelerator instead of hitting the brakes! :bonk:

Right now I have 2 teenagers with learners permits....and to my suprise, they are doing rather well....when they get their report cards and I find out that they have maintained "mom's standards for getting a license" they will be signed up for the driving school and they will get their license

You have been warned

The learner's permit is the easy part - at least you're in the car with them while they're driving. It's handing them the keys and watching them pull out of the driveway unaccompanied that's nerve-wracking. :faint:

j/k

I know you'll teach them the right way. No tailgating and don't pull out in front of vehicles, especially motorcycles.

I have 2 sons, now 18 & 22. When they both were of age to receive their learners permit, were able to get them. But I will tell you this. I made both of them keep their learners for a year. Yes I know I had to ride along with them longer than i wanted to. But, for one I think it gave them more time to learn. Rather than to be 16 out on the streets ripping, running and possibly killing themselves. They also didnt get brand new hot rods just because they had their licenses.

What happened to parents saying "No"?

Why should a child be entitled to having a driver's license and a car?

Is this a "birthright"?

The scary part is, most of these kids already have a cell phone BEFORE they are given access to a car.

Lethal combination, IMO.

i wasnt allowed to get mine till i was 18 due to not so great grades. also i have been around farming equipment and go carts and all that fun kid stuff so i THOUGHT i was invincable. it took me 2 weeks to learn that i wasnt . since then i have been more alert. it may take a fender bender to calm down speedracer, but some of us had to be forced to learn. that was years ago. i sugest a gps tracking unit. like lojack. i can get a text message saying that i went over the posted speed limit; if i wanted to. that way you could keep tabs on how "wreckless" they are. dunno now that i have a youngin on the way seems i notice how dumb alot of kids (16yr-18yr) drive. i was most likely the same...

Well since it's not your kid, I would say there's not much you can do about it.

:yeahthat: Best you can do is remind them to slow down; that arriving there dead would be a waste of all the time spent primping before going out. :ohwell:
