Mark 1:29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
So... now I know. Simon had a mother-in-law. I learn something every time I read the Bible. I always skipped right over this precious little fact. The Bible says Simon's [who was named Peter by Jesus] mother-in-law was sick in bed. So Simon [who was named Peter by Jesus] was married!
Those men walked out on their jobs and left their wives to follow Jesus. Were there children that were left behind? Did their wives and children follow along too? Was it the children of the Disciples who wanted to play around the feet of Jesus? That would make more sense. After all it is normal for a dad to say, "go play, leave Jesus alone now" than it would to have some mean old disciple yelling at children "git... scat".
Now check out verse 34. Jesus put a muzzle on the demons because "they knew who he was". It caught my eye this morning. I had to search out a meaning.
Why does the Bible say He wouldn't let the demons speak "because they knew who he was"? Demons are the things that make us say things we don't mean. Demons are the things that make us "forget" important facts. Demons are the things that will toss a church upside down.
Jesus only had four of His twelve disciples at this time. He had a mission to complete. Demons seem to be masters at twisting the truth into a lie while leaving the appearance of the pure truth. Can you imagine what kind of grief it would have brought to the mission if demons confused the masses! Jesus would have to stop working on the Mission to be a full-time healer or spend hours every day inside.... sitting on a throne.... being bored by the laments of the teachers of the law complaining about changes to their precious laws.
Jesus knew how to deal with demons.... and He wasn't above telling a demon to "shut up"!
