Back in the olden days.... I bought a house in Arlington in 1985. At that time, they just put Chlordane in the ground around the house and that kept your house pretty safe from termites for about 30 years. They eventually shelved chlordane in preference to something that was half as carcinogenic and lasted half as long.
Fast forward to this house... now it seems they don't treat to prevent termites at all. Instead, they seem to set up monitoring stations around the house and one has a service that comes out every so often to make sure there are no termites.
I've never cared for that myself. I'd rather stop the termites before they get that close to myself.
Which is neither here nor there.
We currently use Orkin. And paying that much to have some fella come out and walk around my house every couple of months is annoying.
So two questions...
1. What's the usual way to deal with preventing termites from getting to one's home?
2. What's a good, (relatively) local company (Bushwood, St. Mary's county) to handle this?
Take care,
Melody
