Tether your Blackberry Curve Via Bluetooth

Hey gang -

I actually happened upon this by accident - I own a BlackBerry Curve on Sprint. I recently switched from Verizon Wireless where I was able to use my Bluetooth Enabled Moto Q as a wireless modem.

I had a few issues with Verizon (which is another story) so I changed to Sprint. They did inform me at the store that with the Everything Package ($99/mo) you would not be able to use the BlackBerry as a modem. They claim it was because of a billing issue...

Well, yesterday by accident I was able to connect to the net via Bluetooth and didn't even realize it at first. I tested a few more times to confirm but indeed this is the case. Here is how I did it.

Just to point out one issue - this did not work without the software PDANet. Which incredibly does not work with the BlackBerry OS.

PDA Net was installed on my laptop just to provide the access to BT DUN. (If you try to enable BT DUN on the BB it will not work as it is blocked by Sprint). Next, I set up my BT settings on my laptop to see my BB as a DUN - even though on my BlackBerry this is no way to set this.

By the way, I am assuming that you already paired your BB and Laptop.

Next, I just went into my BT Devices screen on the laptop, choose my BB and set it to connect as DUN. Within a few seconds, I was given the indication on the BlackBerry that Bluetooth Modem Mode was enabled and I was surfing the Net on EVDO speeds!

I hope this was detailed enough - I am heading out the door to a clients house but wanted to just post what had happened. Feel free to contact me with any questions!

You can do this with the 8830, or any BT enabled BB device as well....

Better go read your TOS. I have heard of a few people that have gotten bills for thousands of dollars because they used a mobile device as a tether. Your mobile may not have the provisions for an all-you-can-transmit data plan.

Here's one example:

True - you are taking a risk but I have done it for years on Verizon and never got nailed.

Besides, if you are just doing email and basic browsing (which I do) and not downloading movies, etc than you are ok.
