Texas student protest

Should kids who can't pass the test be allowed to walk with their class even though they did not meet the minimum criteria?

"We know we're not going to get our diplomas, but we just want to walk across the stage," Martinez said. "That's all we ask for right now."

Classmate Chloe Walker agreed. "I believe that I have at least the right to walk the stage with all my friends," she said. "I made it this far, and I have all my credits I need. I deserve to get my certificate of completion."

Look at the wording on the sign. :killingme

Crystal Martinez complained that while she finished at the top of her class with a 3.5 grade point average, she is now blocked from graduation by failing the TAKS test.

Have to wonder what kind of classes she took to get a 3.5 GPA and not be able to pass a simple skills test.

Thinking Chemistry and Calculus weren't in her schedule.. but just a guess.

I had to finish High School in Summer school, so I walked at graduation, but didn't recieve a diploma. The Principal just shook out hand. I got my diploma in Aug. when I finished the course.

Simple - they gave her cheese grades so she'd feel good about herself and her Mommy and Dad would stop calling them.

All I can say is that it sounds like they have a good test, and a bad school. Why would you WANT to walk across the stage? Wouldn't it be very embarrassing and even humiliating to know you were on stage in front of a bunch of people NOT getting your diploma because you couldn't make the grade?

Too many kids these days want something for nothing. If it was a requirement then thats it. Suck it up. I didn't walk with my HS class either becuase I didn't make the grade and finished in summer school. Served me right for cutting class. I did it to myself. When are kids going to take some responsibilty for their actions instead of blaming the planet.

Okay done venting! :coffee:

I think these students should be required to walk across the stage at the graduation at the end of the ceremonies. AND they should be required to walk across the stage individually and accompanied by their teachers and parents.

Let all the whiners walk on stage as a group and introduced as "the students who are not receiving a diploma today because they are failures." Maybe they'd get the hint...

... or sue the county for harassment.
