Texas Woman Who Killed Sons Acquitted

I know ... I'm just not a big fan of "insanity" pleas ... or people using their religion as an excuse for their crimes.

I do, however, feel deep empathy for her family and her husband's family.

Amen! I can't imagine how I'd feel if I came home to a dead child b/c my spouse thinks God told him to do it. :ohwell:

What is rare in this case, is all the shrinks agree. They usually don't.
yes very rare and i would love to get in her head just to find out why she did it ?

You could make the case that anyone who kills, rapes or molests little kids is mentally ill. So why doesn't everyone who does a violent crime get off on an "insanity" plea? I mean, it's not their fault, right? They're mentally ill.

I am not saying all criminals are insane, so please do not misconstrue my words.

I don't think she was misconstruing your words; rather, she's saying "anyone who commits murder IS nuts" because that's just not normal behavior ... that they MUST have something wrong with 'em mentally to be capable of taking another person's life.

No, I'm saying all criminals are mentally ill.
if that is true, then the best place for her is a mental institution - not prison.
Why? If someone is so insane they beat their children to death, the best place for them is dead, not in some institution or even prison. What's the point of keeping them around? So we can spend money on "rehabilitation" so this woman can "take her rightful place in society"?

This would be a much better country if we'd put down our rabid dogs instead of feeling sorry for them and giving them special treatment.

Others who grew up only knowing a life of crime, and whose crimes have steadily escalated over time and minor punishment if any for crimes done.
Then the issue isn't to be soft on the criminal ... it's that we need to get tougher on crime ... there shouldn't be ANY parole for someone who murders or rapes, in my opinion. And if you steal, you should face a VERY stiff penalty. Some people commit crimes for the sole purpose of going to jail b/c it's easier than real life. That shouldn't be the case ... and if they knew prison wasn't the cake-walk it is, they'd probably think twice about it. :ohwell:

I think the point is more for study, to learn from the mentally ill so we (used loosely) can prevent and treat this type of illness in the future, before something horrible happens.
Loonies are secretive. Most are able to function in society without anyone knowing they're insane. Or maybe their families realize something's wrong but they don't tell because they don't want their "loved one" being stigmatized.

We can study the mentally ill all we want but we'll never know who they are UNTIL something horrible happens.

A typical insanity defense involves proving the criminal was unable to differentiate between right and wrong. But that's obvious BS because they typically hide the bodies and are trying not to get caught. If they didn't know right from wrong, wouldn't they have whacked people in broad daylight in front of witnesses instead of sneaking around?

Violent criminals know this stuff is wrong, they just can't control their impulses. So are we better off treating these people so they CAN control themselves or just electrocuting them and being done with it? I don't believe mental illness can ever be treated so that the crazy person will never be a threat again. I think doctors jut like their little guinea pigs and it has nothing to do with "healing" anyone.

:bs: The woman should be gassed, or better yet, beaten over the head with the same rock she used on her children. :duh:

It's just apalling to me that anyone would defend this woman's actions, crazy or not. The surviving son is hosed for life, poor kid.

I have to agree ... take this woman for instance: good, christian/religious woman/family ... who'd suspect Mrs. Church-goer of committing such a horrible crime. I doubt there were any warning signs that she'd take such a drastic step. But here we are, discussing why she should/shouldn't get the chair for killing her babies.

Sadly, most of these freaks aren't deemed "freaks" until AFTER they commit a crime like this. Besides, when someone acts "strange" or says something "bizarre", and you call the cops, what do they say? "Sorry, we can't do anything until they actually commit a crime."

I'm sorry, but it's time for the law to be on the side of decent folks who don't commit these types of crimes; not on the side of the criminal. :ohwell:

I dunno. It says even the prosecution's psychiatrists believe this woman is nuts. 5 out 5 psychiatrists agree, which in a murder trial is almost unheard of.

"Psychiatrists testified that Laney believed she was divinely chosen by God — just as Mary was chosen to bear Christ — to kill her children as a test of faith and then serve as a witness after the world ended."

WHo cares if she's insane.. she's a danger to society, and her kids are no less dead..

Prick her!
