WOW..... just go a call from the pharmacy about my dogs med...

well its just Doxy but i guess they are having issues with the makers of Doxy...

This is also a medication us with Lyme take .. some of us for a very long time... and i get it thru my insurance for FREE... so i never had to worry about the real cost.

so i asked for the price..... :faint:... :jameo:... he told me for 80 pills it would be $289.00 but with the RX card I have for my dog (yep.. he has a prescription card) ...it dropped it down to 10 bucks and some change!!!

He also told me due to the issues with the other makers … they have RAISED the price on Doxy… .. REALLY!!!????

About a year or so ago I was able to purchase a bottle of 500 tablets for under 50 bucks!!!!

How did you get a Prescription Card for your Pup? Thank God that you got a huge deal on the Doxicycline too, especially of your baby has to take it long term. Does he have Lyme?

he does not have lyme... he has an auto immune diesease SLO

... I got the card from a friend :yay:...

sad thing is.... EVERYONE is having a hard time getting it... So I feels for those who have lyme.. as I do. I have finished my year plus treatment and it sucked taking Doxy for that long but it works.

I talked to my vet the other day and the price went up 10 times what it use to be!!! He is researching another "cycline" type drug out and we will report back to each other about our findings. As I will talk with my DR about what he is going to do seeing he uses it ALOT!.

Doxy is one of the best drugs out there and is used to treat a wide spread of infections and diseases. I use it alot for kennel cough and its also used for pneumonia as well.

My Sister takes it for Gum issues as well. Low dose every day, and has been taking it for years. What is SLO? I hope he's doing well. Isn't it funny that when something is good for you, the prices of it go up?

Is it a form of Lupus? Sorry for asking so many questions, but WOW! You are a good Mommy for taking such good care of him, making him comfortable.

SLO is an autoimmune disease of dogs which can cause severe claw problems in otherwise apparently healthy dogs. It is characterised by the loss of claws from more than one paw - eventually all claws may be lost. Other symptoms may include: receding quicks, secondary infection (often with a strong smell), claw splitting (usually down the back of the claw), pain, distorted/twisted claws and lameness.

A firm diagnosis can only be reached by the biopsy of a claw, dewclaws usually being used for this. In the absence of an available dewclaw it is necessary to amputate a toe at its bottom joint in order to do the biopsy. In many cases, this is considered an extreme step to take, and is not strictly necessary. If the dog is showing signs of SLO, treatment using the latest protocols can be started - if they work, it largely confirms the diagnosis, even without the biopsy.

Modern treatments include the use of essential fatty acid (EFA) supplements, antibiotic treatment with tetracycline and niacinamide (nicotinamide). Removal of claws as they become loose can help to alleviate pain, but generally isn't necessary. Although there are few studies to scientifically confirm the results, the treatment appears to be effective. Once the disease is in remission, supplementation may need to be continued for life to prevent relapse.

SLO can appear in all breeds, including crossbreeds and mixed-breeds, although some breeds seem to be more susceptible than others. It is not infectious or contagious - other dogs which come into contact with it cannot contract it. It appears to be spontaneous, and there is no evidence of an hereditary factor - because of the absence of studies and the small number of known cases though, there is little proof of this other than anecdotal evidence.

It is likely that it is a newly-recognised old condition, rather than a new disease. It is probably more common than it appears, because in many cases it is not diagnosed correctly. In response to the lack of information available, a number of owners of dogs with this condition have gathered on the Internet to share information and support, and to discuss management and treatment protocols.

it is what it is.... its not like I did anything crazy.... and I didnt have to do the biopsy... as my WONDERFUL vet and I have both seen the same thing.. and i have had input with other vets i have worked with.

we have tried two meds... and the one med he started to have a reaction with as it will raise the liver values. I was able to notice after a week on the med ... that all of a sudden his appetite decreased... so before i even cleared it with the vet I stopped giving it ASAP

spoke with my vet and he was right on board with my thoughts and decision i made. We also discussed what to do now and both agreed on the next step.

He is such a wonder man... and he is always there to help. Like this Sat... seeing that the nails he still has are sore and some have lifted...I cant clip them back alone... nor do I want to hurt him anymore that it will... so he will help me do it.. in case we need to remove any at that time.

most of the ones he has lost have started to regrow back ....

It really no biggie.... just doing what needs to be done for him

I just looked SLO up, and man..is that ever a horrible and painful condition. The pictures were gruesome. I read an article where they said that one of the triggers MAY be food allergy related. They also recomended fish oil, and vitamin E. They mentioned Tetracycline as being one of the meds used to treat it. I know years ago, tetracycline was cheap.

dont think its a food trigger... since he is an allergy dog.... he has been on a food that is grain free .. and he can only have a few protiens...

he has been on the fish oils and vit e most his life...

tetra is a hard one to give as it doesnt fit in my life stye... its given TID and i cant fit that in that easy.....

Doxy is good as it also has and anti flam agent to it as well.

he has had a better reaction on pred..... as it was the Azathioprine that was hard on him... and if that was hard on him than the Cyclosporine would be as well

I wonder that if he is in remission so to speak, that the tetra can be given BID? Or maybe even a bolus of two given at night. It might be something to consider if the Doxi gets too expensive, or hard to get. It sounds like you are at the top of the game to say the least.

no it cant be Bid... nor can you double it.

this is only given for the secondary infection as they are licking the nail beds.. and when the nails come off

Im also consulting with a vet i worked with at the ER.... and she is going on to become a Derm Vet..... so she was in a lecture the other day and this was a topic... so we have been bouncing around using Biotin as well....

and its great cuz as i have said before... my rdvm knows of all my sources and is greatful to learn from them as well... this also help him out.

as she is more into the Derm side of things...

.... price wise... i will be fine... and worst case is I talk to my Dr... and get a script for me for Doxy seeing that i have used mine for the dogs.

and I need to have it on hand for when i have a flare up from lyme. :yay:

they will get the Doxy thing worked out... till then... I will stock up on it the best I can!!
