New York Times Magazine reporter and 1619 Project founder Nikole Hannah-Jones declared Monday in a since-deleted tweet that "tipping is a legacy of slavery" and "almost nowhere else" in the world utilizes the practice.

"Tipping is a legacy of slavery and if it's not optional then it shouldn't be a tip but simply included in the bill. Have you ever stopped to think why we tip, like why tipping is a practice in the US and almost nowhere else?" the left-wing writer tweeted in response to former MSNBC host Touré Neblett criticizing the practice of tipping.

"America is a slaveocracy, part 1619," Neblett declared in response to Hannah-Jones' claim, a reference to the 1619 Project.

Because slavery was/is found nowhere else in the entire world, thoughout history, except in the United States.

I'm for no tipping. Pay them 15% higher wages and fire the ones that aren't capable of doing a good job rather than guilt customers into paying them extra regardless of the quality of service.

See, I like to tip. It makes me happy to reward a good server because in my mind they make all the difference in the world when it comes to enjoying my dining experience. The food can be amazing and plated in 24k gold, but if the service sucks the whole meal sucks.

I am also of this mindset. I do however tip according to SERVICE. Crappy service gets crappy (or no) tip.
What I do disagree with is the "We automatically add XX% tip if parties are more than X people." Why exactly am I forced to tip a certain amount regardless of the quality of service just because I have 6 people eat at the table? Do I get a guaranteed refund on my bill if the service quality is sub-par?

This is the way. I'm not interested in subsidizing the labor costs of an eating establishment. Pay them according to the value they deliver to your restaurant, or don't go into business at all, damn cheapskates.

Not me. Both of my daughters worked for tips when they were young/students and they made FAR more working that way than they ever would have made from wages that were 15% more...or even 50% more.... In fact, the younger one was a waitress at a popular DC bar while she was at UofM and made $200 average in tips. on her busier evening shifts, which were typically 6 hours long.

I'm sure their experiences were/are not atypical.

That's because you're a cheap ass Democrat who doesn't value those you consider "servants". You think it's your due to be catered to and waited upon, and have no respect for the people who do it.
