A young navy officer was involved in a serious accident aboard a ship. His ear lobes were seriously disfigured, and had to have both ear lobes amputated. This, however, did not disqualify him for military duty, and he served a distinctive career, rising to the rank of Admiral. However, he remained very sensitive about his appearance.

The admiral was interviewing Master Chiefs for his new Command Master Chief position, and had selected three for the final interview. The first Master Chief was a surface warfare specialist, and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview, the Admiral asked him "do you notice anything different about me"? The Master Chief responded "Yes, sir, I couldn't help but notice that you have no ears." The Admiral got very angry at his lack of tact, and threw the Master Chief out.

The second interview was with an aviation Master Chief. This interview was even better than the first, and the Admiral was very pleased, and he asked the same question: "Do you notice anything different about me? The aviation Master Chief responded "Yes, sir, I noticed that you have no ears". The Admiral got angry and threw him out as well.

The third interview was with a submariner Master Chief. This interview was fantastic. The master Chief was articulate, sharp, extremely knowledgeable, and just seemed to be better than the other two candidates combined. The Admiral asked the same question again. To his surprise, the submariner answered "Yes, you wear contact lenses".

The admiral was impressed that the submariner could see this and didn't mention his ears. How did you know that I wear contact lenses, he asks?

The Submariner Master Chief replied, "Well, Admiral, it's pretty hard to wear glasses with no friggin' ears".
