Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?
“The son of David,” they replied.
43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your feet.”’
45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Jesus posed a riddle. Whose son is the Messiah? The Pharisees claim the Messiah is the "Son of David". To me.... it means the Pharisees thought the Messiah would be human, like David, but much bigger and badder than David. David had his conquests, but the conquests of the Messiah wouldn't be local... the conquests of the Messiah would be global.

Remember, the Sadducees didn't believe in Heaven. They believed "you die, you die, that's it... worm food". So, they would not consider the option the Messiah was with God when He created Adam.... that would not compute for a Sadducee and a Pharisee are bound to uphold the Jewish traditions which taught them the Messiah would pull them out of all their sorrows. If the Sadducees are to believe anything close to what the Pharisees sited, then the idea that the Messiah would be anything accept a human king would be the reasonable result.

Remember, please, the author of this Gospel, Matthew, was a tax collector, a government employee, before he became a Disciple of Jesus. He wrote from the mind of a government employee. With that in mind.... perhaps the interpretation to modern conversation might have gone more like this....

Jesus "Just what do you think about this 'coming Messiah'? Whose son will it be?"

Pharisee "He's a descendant of David"

Jesus "How can David call one of his descendants 'Lord'? He hasn't been born yet!"

I think these are the verses that show the Messiah would have a global ministry. The Messiah would have a global affect. Jesus healed the sick and fed the poor and He had a global effect on humanity.

The answer to the riddle.... God's Son.
