The Feds can own your WLAN too

At a recent ISSA (Information Systems Security Association) meeting in Los Angeles, a team of FBI agents demonstrated current WEP-cracking techniques and broke a 128 bit WEP key in about three minutes. Special Agent Geoff Bickers ran the Powerpoint presentation and explained the attack, while the other agents (who did not want to be named or photographed) did the dirty work of sniffing wireless traffic and breaking the WEP keys.

Interesting, so the FBI could basically sit in front of your house and tap into your WLAN, see what you have on your computer and they might not even need a search warrant. Humm

Yep, sure could and they do.

This is your captain!
Good not to broadcast your WLAN SSID then. That might help. My laptop generally shows between 3 and 5 WLAN networks at any given time, here in the neighborhood - if I know they're there, then so can anyone interested in gaining access.

This is why I refuse to go wireless. I can listen to 900 MHz phone with a handheld scanner- or another phone. I'm sure someone already figured out cell phones eons ago- though I haven't heard how to do it yet.

Privacy, like most securities in life, is nothing but an illusion. This is especially true when it comes to hi-tech comm stuff.

I'm your huckleberry!
You also need to lock down your WLAN via MAC controlled access if you really want to secure it. Not broadcasting your SID is just a start, with out controlling access you could still sniff out a network despite a broadcasted SID.

So can they do that to anyone anytime or is this something that needs a warrant?
Actually, they come knock on your door and ask for your permission.
It happened to one of my neighbors, but they said "No", so they went away.

I am just thankful that she told me how to handle the situation if it ever happens to me.
Just say "No".
