Is this weekend  Feel free to participate! I'd be interested in knowing what ya' saw . For those that have done this longer than me (I've only done this one time ) - does it count if I don't SEE the bird but HEAR the bird? I heard an owl yesterday but couldn't see it. Can I put that on the list if I hear it again on Sunday when I do this?

I'd say yes and yes, dems. If you go to the form, it sounds like you just record the highest amount each time you observed.

I may participate, too. :yay:

Been having flocks of red-winged blackbirds in yard the last couple of days. My resident mockingbird is going to kill his/herself trying to chase them away..:lmao:

Ours will fall under the Brandywine observations.
However, we our close to Hughesville.

But what I find intriguing is that the species seen varies in a short distance.

Just go across the Patuxent and you get different species. SoMd is so unique.

Wish there was snow, always a better variety. Will be walking about and looking a little tomorrow and Sunday. I'll jot them down as I see them on paper, but will enter them on line.

I've been in my house for 30 years and just saw the first red wing blackbirds last week, but they are hanging out with some bad company flocks of blackbirds or proably grackels that just swope down and chase all the other birds away and then wipe out my bird feeders of feed in no time flat.

I've got FOUR feeders and have been having to fill them EVERY day. :faint: Tomorrow I'm also throwing out bread and apples and walnuts too:clap: - can't stick around long for the count but Sunday and Monday I'm breaking out my new binoculars

I enjoy it big time, just hoping for a good showing. I will walk down in the woods to sit and watch. Total peace. I know most of the regular birds around either by their sound, flight path, or wing flap motions. Until I get to the Hawks, where they're harder to distinguish (for me, at least). Winter time (with snow) usually brings towhees, maybe a brown thrasher or two, in addition to the normal juncos, cardinals, titmice, goldfinches, chickadees, and a host of different sparrows.

Redwings drop in frequently in the winter time, and do try taking over. Cool looking birds, but yeah...hangin' out with the wrong crowd! :lmao:

Lots of birds, but nothing unusual this morning. I may go out again in a little while.
pileated, red-bellied, downy, wrens, chickadees, titmice, robins, doves, white throated, among others. Stan-DARD!

That sounds like my usual crew, give or take - I have a hawk (daytime) that scares them all away and an owl (night) that hunts for sleepers.

Dems, thanks for bringing this up and reminding us all to count today!!:howdy:

I will be doing the count in my area...
Right now I have to go out and pick up a black headed vulture that someone shot a few times...Grrrrrr.....
So add one vulture to my count.

You counters have a great time!!!!

Haven't seen my hawk in a while, and for the life of me I still can't tell what kind it is. We went to the zoo yesterday and the bird expert told me juvenile sharp-shinned and coopers are virtually indistinguishable. He even threw in the young red shouldered into that mix.

So now I just say it is a hawk.

Got up this morning at daybreak and went out. Something about the weather maybe today?, but there was all kinds of bird activity out there.

I couldn't count them all, there were so many. A huge flock of all kinds of blackbirds, and maybe a hundred or more robins. Never seen that many at the same time. They were flying aggressively, too.

Saw two pileated Wps today (one drumming in clear view, I was getting a headache thinking about how they do that ), and a couple of flickers (along with the normal rest of the backyard bunch).

Glad to hear your hawk is doing well and eating on its own!
Nice job!!

Brown Creepers, NutHatches, Carolina Wrens, 5 different species of Woodpeckers-and all the usual suspects.
I did see an unusual hawk but couldn’t ID it-still going through my books and the Internet.
