Going here for the holiday:

Have any of you been there, done that? Share your experience, please.

How about the train, did you ride?

I just got back from there last week. My family goes at least once a year for almost 20 years now. But we always stay in Pigeon Forge. We always make a trip to Cherokee NC while we're there. My mom likes the Harrah's casino there. :lmao:

The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad ride is OK, but I won't do it again. It was my first time on a train, so that was cool. But, it was very expensive and kind of boring after a while. I almost fell asleep.

Let me know if you need any other info. :howdy:

Oh, by the way, that website you posted has some old info on it. The Ghost Town in the Sky in Maggie Valley NC has been closed for years. But, I see on their site they're supposed to reopen in the Spring 2007. That's great, I enjoyed the Ghost Town in the Sky!

My dad lives on the Tennessee side, it's a gorgeous, gorgeous area. We're going to buy land out that way eventually. :yay:

Thanks Speedy and Nickel.

The train I already have reservations for, I'll share my opinion when return.

Amazing to me how many people are doing the same as me. The train rides are selling out and I was lucky to get the last cabin available...so I was told.

Lesson learned: reserve way in advance.

Maybe we went the wrong time of year or something. We (my family and I) had one section all to ourselves. There was hardly anybody there.

Have a great time!

So are you back yet? How was the trip?

Incase still interested, the trip was wonderful. The cabin was nicked named "the cabin from hell" but I survived.

Oh.. and if anyone is interested Queen's Lake Haven (the actual name of the cabin) is for sale at a jaw dropping price of $650,000.00

I wouldn't advise it but, go for it if you wish....

I cannot wait to get back to those mountains tho. I think I found my true home...

What was the problem with the cabin?

How was the train ride?

We went to the Smokey Mountains when I was a kid. My parents had a friend that lived in a small town between two mountains. It was the poorest place I had ever seen. Old coal mining town.

I love Maggie Valley and the surrounding area. Spent 7 days there a few years ago. I know where I want to live when I grow old. Hendersonville and Ashville are awsome aswell.

I enjoyed the train ride. I could just sit there staring out the window viewing the mountains, river, waterfalls, all the beauty of the place without fear of driving myself off the mountain while staring. There were so many breath taking views. On some of my travels driving up and down the mountain there were many times I just wanted to stop and take it all in but, there was no place one could pull over.

The online version of the cabin differed from the up close and personal. These places are not cheap and you pay to have certain things. After arriving found a note saying "dishwasher is broke do not use" I thought, no problem I do dishes at home, hardly ever use my dishwasher.

Things that awaited for me to find on my own that also did not work:

1. The hot tub out on the deck (wouldn't heat up)

2. Heat in the place would've been nice since the temps dipped down in the 30's at night (days were just right)

3. DVD player

4. Chimney thingy on deck where one would normally build a fire for some warmth had giant hole so no logs could be placed.

5. Never found the outside grill that was posted on the deck in the online picture. I was really looking forward to cooking a steak out there.

6. Plain ole electricity would've been sweet to have. For some reason at night the breakers would pop. The first night was a trip walking, tripping, fumbling, stumbling in the dark around an unfamiliar place looking for the breaker box and being thrilled when finally thinking one found it only to discover that the place must have two and oh where oh where could it be. Ah, who'd a thunk it would be behind that big ole mirror.

The list kinda goes on, but I'll stop.

I just told myself, survive the night for day would come and I could go exploring again. Most beautiful mountains I have ever seen.

I would love to explore both areas you mentioned as well. And some other places. I hope to live up in the mountains someday. I'm already planning a trip in the spring. I can't wait.
