The Last House on the Left

Just saw it last night....I really was not at all impressed. It was pretty slow and seems to drag on until the part when the parents realize who the people are. And even then it was not what I was expecting from the previews.

That being said I am very hard on movies I see in the theater since I do not get to see them often with two little ones. :ohwell:

See, I disagree... I loved the movie... even had to watch multiple parts through my fingers because I don't do so well with blatent gore ala Hostel.

The original was better psychologically, this one was better visually.

TINY SPOILER ALERT

Excessive gore does not really bother me....yet I hate horror movies :)shrug: ).

What got me about it was that I felt it started out slow, then goes into the woods scene were it started getting good but the rape scene really turned me off to the movie. It was just too much. I think they could have gotten the same point across without being so graphic.
And then the very last scene with the microwave just did not seem to fit with the flow of the rest of the movie....it was like they just threw in there to get a reaction.

I have never seen the original. If it is more psychological maybe that is more my thing because I love the psychological thrillers.

In the original the scenes are much more visual. Page is raped and disemboweled. Mary is raped twice... once by the chick and once by the guy she was raped by in this version. Mary also dies in the original.

Liked the movie, especially in the theatre. I'll probably rent it again when it comes out. Nice visuals, acting and simple yet effective story.

I too didn't enjoy the microwave scene. That was a bit goofy I thought. However, the rape scene was necessary. It is a horror movie for a reason. Horror doesn't always have a monster but it must repulse in some manner. The rape scene in particular was very uncomfortable. As a viewer you wanted to be there to help the poor lass. That's when you know you're watching a decent movie. When you feel as if you're there or as if you should be doing something or your own emotions are juxtaposed with a particular character.

This is the ultimate rape revenge film. I would at least give it a rent.

I so wish they had left the microwave scene on the cutting room floor. More on this below.

Otherwise, I dug this film. It was very atmospheric and intense. The acting was solid; you felt for the heroes and loathed the criminals, as it should be. No Devil's Rejects-style "Let's sympathize with the villains and set their death scene to 'Free Bird'!" business here. The film is also very well-made. Taut suspense and an edge of creepiness throughout.

*SPOILERS*

The problem with the microwave scene... it's such a goofy way to end an otherwise serious, emotional film. And it leaves so many logic holes; how are the parents going to explain it to the police? The rest of the slayings were self-defense and preceded by struggles. But a man tied up, his head exploded in a microwave?

Just watched this again and enjoyed it...again.

The rape scene is uncomfortable but a necessity for my aforementioned reasons and more. First, if you didn't feel the villains should be punished thoroughly, after the rape scene you certainly changed your point of view. Second, the 1972 original is just as brutal for it's time. It's most assuredly a rape revenge film. The directer doesn't want any sympathy whatsoever for the villain.

The simple question the film asks is this: What would you do if someone hurt a loved one? How far would you go?
