Mark 14:43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Every time I have been through the Bible.... I find something new. This is new. Look at verse 51. There's a naked guy!A nameless young man was at the garden, wrapped only in a linen garment.... he took off naked.
Now who was that? I did a Bing search. Some say it was John, others claim it was one of the Zebedee boys. It can't be them though. They were with Jesus in the garden. They had just shared the Passover with Jesus. They would still have all their clothes on.
I think this was Mark [known as John Mark in the Book of Acts]. It would make sense. If Mark lived near the garden and heard the commotion of men with swords and clubs, he might have jumped out of bed and followed to check out the drama. His arrival at the gardens to witness the arrest would have tied him to the disciples. That would give his Gospel credence.
I don't think the other Gospels covered the naked escapee. Just Mark and that makes me think it was Mark. Maybe Mark saw the whole thing go down, and that's what made him decide to join the mission. He ran too... so it must have been a really scary time in the garden.
Yes, I have seen the assault and healing. I've heard all kinds of sermons on the healing of the ear. I wonder if there was any stray blood on the "garment" he left behind.
Everyone took off... even the naked guy!
