I had salmonella when I was a kid.
I got it from those tiny little turtles.
I bought one of those tiny turtles back in 1983. You know, the red eared sliders that came in the fish bowl with a little plastic island in the middle. She's now 23 years old and in a 75 gallon tank.
We have other small turtles too. They're all over the 4" limit. Even though our kids are older now we rarely let them mess with them and if they do we immediately make them was their hands. None of us has ever had salmonella.
We've all, at one time or another, been bitten or scratched by hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pigs, sugar gliders and other small "exotics". I guess we've just been smart enough to clean the wounds well and lucky enough that we never got sick.
