The Purge

Just watched it... find it very thought provoking.... very.

Watched it with my 21 year old son and my mother. We all had varying opinions throughout the movie as to what we thought we would do in each of the pivotal circumstances.

Very thought provoking indeed. I bought it off "on demand" and it was worth every penny.

Hmmmmm. Very thought provoking... especially in the times we are living in now.

Concept was brilliant, however I think they failed to take it to its potential though. It was an okay movie, easily predictable.

What I liked best was that it really made each of us watching question our moral compass at various pivotal decision points.

Okay, I read the Wiki spoiler and saw the trailer. I don't think it's thought-provoking at all. Here's my problem:

12 hours to commit crimes, and that supposedly satisfied criminals throughout the rest of the year?

Where do they get their drug money the other 364 days of the year?

Does nobody snap and beat their wife, they just save up those beatings for the Purge?

Child molesters manage to control themselves until it's time to Purge?

Nobody is a homicidal maniac?

Stock brokers spend their 12 hours insider trading because they can't do it any other day of the year?

Criminals and crazy people abide by the rules during the Purge?

I don't like movies that have absolutely no basis in reality. What am I missing?

You are missing a lot. The movie is about more than the idea of a cleansing night.

Do you agree with what his kid did? Would you have done the same?
Do you agree with the stance the father took? Would have you been able to follow through with the tough choice?
Would you have off'd the neighbors?
etc.
etc.
etc.

But that being the catalyst for all that happens during, you'd think they'd take that week to vacation out of the country.

That's what I thought too. Are we supposed to assume it's a world thing and not just in America? Maybe there is a law everyone is to remain home and no traveling?

First off, I wouldn't let some bloody stranger into my home during Purge. I would assume he was trying to trick me so I'd let him in and he'd kill my whole family.

In fact, I'd have locked the daughter in a room in case she got any ideas from her dip#### boyfriend.

It's just a bad premise, so the story that follows isn't going to be terribly interesting to me.

This is why I don't watch movies with you. You have your mind made up before get through opening credits...

Not always - I start out hopeful but they have to show me something in the first 15 mins or so. I openly admit I suck to watch movies with. I'm constantly, "Okay, how stupid. Why don't they just....?"

Like in horror movies when the nubile young thing is being chased through a house by an ax-wielding maniac and she just HAS to go in the basement and check out the noise; or she won't finish him off when she shoots or stabs him; or she runs UPstairs where she'll be trapped instead of busting out a ground level window to escape; or she's so scared she fumbles her car keys; or....

Well, you get the idea.
