The Reason They Support Trump Isn't About Trump

"People who don't know farmers or live near or in a farm community have little idea of why we feel so connected to our place," said Leum. "But they do seem to have strong opinions about who we are, and when they find out we supported Trump, they look at us as that dumb farmer who doesn't know any better."

"Well those dumb farmers, they're an electrician. They're a plumber. They are mechanics, scientists, conservationists. They take care of the crops that fill their cupboards, (who) love and care for the animals who provide dairy and meat for their feasts. They are also vets and engineers," she says with pride and a broad smile. "I mean, we have all these skills because you cannot keep calling repair people, so you do it yourself. So actually, I think we are pretty darn smart."

All five farmers like President Trump's policies. His demeanor? Not so much. But they knew Trump would come through with better trade deals, which he did with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Vernon County is one of the 23 counties that voted for then-President Barack Obama in 2012 and switched to Trump in 2016.

While many national outlets have parachuted into the Vernon Counties of the last presidential race to ask voters about Trump when the trade deal dragged on, when special counsel Robert Mueller's report was released and when Trump was impeached (and acquitted), few journalists ask voters how they got here in the first place. Furthermore, few members of the Republican and Democratic establishments who mock farmers behind closed doors (or openly on social media) have reflected meaningfully about why farmers picked Trump over their establishment candidates.

Interesting article comrade.

It is perfect for one of your propaganda outlets.

It plays the Trump voter as the victim...in this case the "poor dumb hick farmer". It also continues the asinine story line about how much territory Trump voters cover....Trump voters who repeat this garbage only prove the basic premise of the "poor dumb hick Trump voter". Corn doesn't get a vote...we don't get to cast votes based on the number of acres we own. Votes are cast by individuals.

At no point in the article does the author actually define WHY these people voted for Trump. "For our community"? WTF does that mean? Which community? The farming community? The town they live in? The county? The state? The local Moose lodge?

They "knew Trump would come through with better trade deals, which he did with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement."

NAFTA 2.0 didn't help dairy farmers (the seeming focus of the story) in any meaningful way. NAFTA 2.0 didn't do anything for farmers in any meaningful way. NAFTA 2.0 didn't make any major changes to NAFTA 1.0. The really odd thing about this article is that they don't mention the "Phase 1" deal with China...which the author could make a better case for (until one actually looks at the prices of ag products since the deal was signed.)

So the article, for those who are actually paying attention to facts and not propaganda, only goes to show how Trump has failed the farming community.

Transporter following the herd, oblivious to the reason Trump was elected and will easily be re-elected come election day. Keep believing what your "news" outlets tell you. The simple man will make sure there's food on your table. :yay:

One of the wealthiest people I personally know is a farmer. He owns two Learjets, each with his logo on the tail. He uses them to fly between his home base in Howard County (our family farm was next to that one and I worked there as a kid, milking cow, bailing hay etc), his massive agriculture operations in New Jersey, his even more massive corn growing operations in Texas, and his waterfront estate in Florida.

Yeah...a really stupid feller, that guy.

I still think farmers were the first engineers.
A fair point. Some of the first engineers developed implements and later machines to support farming. The other "first engineers" were involved in weapons development and defensive technologies.

So the first engineers were focused on improving ways to feed people and kill them. So little has changed...

You're as big (or bigger) an idiot than Bloomberg.. with a lot less money.

What, exactly, has Trump done that has hurt dairy farmers?? And what the hell do you know about dairy farming that would give you any kind of insight??

You continue to type your thoughts, proving without a doubt how ignorant you truly are, and how up the ass you are or liberals no matter what.
