Just got this email. I used to love GNR. I'm tempted to hit this concert.

Axl Rose said he'd do it and has.

The charismatic, sometimes controversial frontman of the legendary rock band Guns N' Roses has brought GN'R back for a long-awaited album, the upcoming Chinese Democracy, and a tour through the United States and Canada.

He's got a stable full of all-star rock veterans to take the classic GN'R sound up a few notches. This full-sounding eight-piece band is capable of blasting out the classics, the new stuff and even a few surprising, creatively realized covers along the way.

New lead/rhythm guitarist Robin Finck, who gained industry prominence as part of the influential band Nine Inch Nails, "has grown toward something like equality with Rose," according to Los Angeles Times rock critic Ann Powers.

"His solos flashed and bubbled," Powers wrote after GN'R's recent performance at the "Inland Invasion" festival outside of Los Angeles.

GN'R's guitar sound has always been the product of a lot more than one player, however, and the latest lineup also includes axemen Richard Fortus, formerly of the Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love, and Ron Thal, who plied his trade as Bumblefoot.

Powers noted the "killer chops" of both men and made a point to mention their instrumental transformation of Christina Aguilera's Top 40 hit "Beautiful" into "a sky-is-crying-style blues."

Paul Gargano of the Hollywood Reporter was impressed, too.

"One of the night's most memorable performances was 'November Rain,' which featured Rose on piano at center stage and Finck and guitarist Richard Fortus trading leads," Gargano wrote.

Meanwhile, keyboardist Dizzy Reed returns to his familiar spot in the band, and his playing and his chemistry with Rose on stage was considered one of the highlights of the recent gig by most critics.

But Reed isn't the only one playing keyboards. Rose will tickle the ivories on the piano from time to time, and GN'R has retained the services of keyboardist, multi-instrumentalist and "sound designer" Chris Pitman, who used to play in Lusk.

On bass, GN'R is being classed up by the presence of Tommy Stinson, who broke into the music industry while in his teens and ended up playing a crucial role in the development of the Replacements, who are widely considered one of the most important rock acts of the 1980s.

Drummer Bryan "Brain" Mantia has an eye-popping rock resume as well. The San Francisco Bay Area native has pounded the skins for Primus, Tom Waits and Praxis, among others

There is no single person...

...in the history of R & R who represents more of the worst of R & R, in one person, than Axl Rose. He killed GNR a long time ago. There is no GNR. There is only the Axl thing.

The best part of GNR was the guitarist Slash, and he's with Velvet Revolver now. That's (VR) a concert I'd go see!

I was going to see them but I don't think they toured locally. Either that or I was wrapped up in something else at the time. Great CD.

And Larry - it's always been an Axl thing. :lmao:

...and I'll be among the first to say he is one of the greatest frontmen of all time...which is why I hold special disdain for him; what HE has pizzed away.

My ex says Axl should never have started taking his meds. He was more creative as an unmedicated manic depressive. :lmao:

...to be fair, they all face the same thing; success.

When you are suddenly a multimillionaire at such a young age and you got there through sex, drugs and rock and roll, it ain't easy staying focused like it was when yer dumb azz was poor.

Have you seen the Volkswagen commercial w/Slash?? VW is giving away a free guitar with every car sold betweeen October and December (in the US only, I suspect).
If you need a guitar to sell your car, you've got a problem with your cars. :killingme
A close-up of Slash's guitar reveals the VW symbol embedded in the fretboard. What self-respecting guitarist would advertise a VW on his guitar? (Or appear in a VW ad, come to think of it.) For $50 this guy will come to your kids birthday party. :bigwhoop:

Are you freaking serious?! I didn't know about the deal between Slash/VW. That is pretty lame.

That was a good article, Speedy! TYVM.

It's running fairly often-poor Slash, times must be tough, because nothing reminds me of rock and roll quite like the new Jetta! :killingme

Its not even a good guitar... Its a POS First Act.... they sell those at walmart.

Now if they were giving a way a $5000 Gibson Les Paul, it might be worth it, especially if someone was in need of a car and guitar at the same time.

...car a few grand and you could get your own freekin quitar.

Does anyone actually show up at a car dealership and say "I saw the commercial and I was thinking this would be a great time to buy a car AND tale up guitar! Yesterday, I didn't think so, but, that add...boy howdy."

There is no "Guns 'N Roses" anymore, no matter what Axl calls his new band. GNR died when Slash left.

The Velvet Revovler disc was very good. Axl will be lucky if his new album is half that good. There is no way it can possibly be "you've waitied 13 years for this but it was worth the wait" good.
