Report: London launches bid to host Super Bowl - ESPN

LONDON -- London has launched an audacious bid to stage the Super Bowl within the next eight years, a move that would see the United States' biggest sporting event played overseas for the first time, the Sunday Telegraph has reported.

According to the newspaper, representatives from the Mayor of London's office and Visit London, the city's official visitor organization, have received assurances from the National Football League of a commitment to hold the event in London.

The NFL has already staged two sellout regular-season games at Wembley Stadium, with a third scheduled for this October.

"We are looking at 2014, 2015 or 2017," David Hornby, the commercial director for Visit London, was quoted as saying.

Talks have been ongoing with the NFL, which has identified London as the outstanding candidate city to host the event outside of the United States, according to the report.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said last week that the league is not considering playing its championship game in London. He shot down a BBC Sport report that "'substantive talks" were under way between the NFL and London officials.

"We have never looked at London or Mexico City as a site," he said.

The NFL again issued a denial Sunday that a Super Bowl outside the United States was being considered, this time via Twitter.

Brian McCarthy, the NFL's vice president of corporate communications, tweeted: "Re: story from UK. We are not pursuing idea of putting a Super Bowl in London or anywhere outside US. Reports last week/today inaccurate."

According to the Sunday Telegraph, the Super Bowl could be worth $521.1 million to the London economy, although the newspaper also quotes an unnamed NFL spokesman as saying: "The suggestions about London are only theoretical. There is no bid document."

However, Wembley Stadium commercial director Jonathan Gregory said, "We will do everything we can to work with the NFL and help bring this amazing event to London."

I read on either ESPN or CNNSI that the mayor's office in London was reporting that the 2014 Super Bowl was "promised" to London and an official announcement would be made sometime in the next 12 months :lmao:

Seriously, if the do primetime in London, that's early-middle afternoon here. That would be a STUPID, STUPID move. That and taking the championship of a 100% AMERICAN LEAGUE and moving it to another country is just retarded. I would boycott that Super Bowl unless my team is in it. I can watch the commercials online later. #### that. They better not pull that crap.

Frankly, as fans, that would be applauded..Much rather have the game over by 6 or 7pm on a Sunday night rather than 1030 or 11. I'm all for moving the SB to Saturdays anyway. Or the college national championship on Saturday afternoon, followed by the SB..

I agree. I know a few people who moved here from Cali and said that they much preferred watching the superbowl at 3 (the time it comes on over there, versus 6 (the time it comes on here). They said they could always party or go out to eat after the game, and/or never had to worry about bedtimes for their kids, as they could stay up and watch the whole thing.

I think that is a cool idea at least that way there is a lock for no one having a home field advantage!! The venue is chosen before we have the two teams that are playing there is a chance of the team winning their division and playing on their own field.

P. S. RICH70 I still think fooseball is the debil!!

nobody really has home field advantage anyway. most of the people who attend the superbowl are there for the social aspects, just to see good football, or other random stuff. the tickets are really expensive and usually sold out far in advance, so nobody really knows who's gonna be playing anyway.

Media speculation.

Roger Goodell already said this wouldn't happen two weeks ago.

Goodell said it wouldn't happen, then a week or so later the London mayor's office was claiming they were promised the game in 2014 (I think?) and Goodell hasn't said anything about it yet. At least I haven't seen the NFL respond yet. Hopefully it's just a rumor.

I'll have to see it to believe it.

Chances are I won't be seeing it.
