The Web back in 1996-1997

Back in 1996 the Web was starting to gain some serious momentum, but it was still just a few years old. Now in 2008, looking 12 years back into the past of the Web can be a both nostalgic and entertaining experience.

To give you some perspective, in 1996…

  • Google.com didn’t exist yet.
  • In January 1996 there were only 100,000 websites, compared to more than 160 million in 2008.
  • The web browser of choice was Netscape Navigator, followed by Microsoft Internet Explorer as a distant second (Microsoft launched IE 3 in 1996).
  • Most people used dial-up Internet connections with mighty speeds ranging from 28.8Kbps to 33.6Kbps. Highly modern 56Kbps modems would arrive in 1997.
  • People had only recently started to switch from 640×480 to 800×600 screen resolutions.

I was on Usenet in '94 and IRC in '95 where Efnet channel takeovers and warbots were fun and the blue screen of death was common. I used Mosaic, started with a 28.8k baud rate and would get fussed at because the phone line was ALWAYS BUSY.

There certainly has been a lot of changes from then to now.

Good Times ... [random thoughts]

in 1994 I discovered First Class Clients ... and got into BBS for a short time .... I really just wanted the Internet ....

[foxhound ran a BBS back in the day - although I do not remember which one]

SupraFAX 28.8 modem ....

I was online in 1995 Running on Earthlink
.. using Netscape 2.1 [it came on 2 floppy discs]
hanging out on Webchat Broadcasting Service - a java based streaming website that still is not matched for real time chatting abilities

I had a Geocities Site .... [I know who didn't]

my Mac II vx could not handle Netscape 3.0 Gold [had a built in html editor] running a whopping 4 MB of Memory
... I got a Mac 6500 / 200 and I was styling with 16 Mb of memory ....

this was my 1st introduction to IP Networking .....
