A new "X-Files" film fifteen years after the series' premiere and a decade after the release of the first big-screen adaptation could have been a disaster. Fans, however, hoped it would shine and stand as an intelligent and respectful continuation of the Scully/Mulder saga. In the end, though, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" is neither. It's not a heinous misfire nor is it anything close to a success. Overall, it's a pedestrian and slightly dull police procedural punctuated with moments of strong acting from David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (as well as Scottish comedian Billy Connolly in a rare dramatic role). There are also a couple of creepy bump-in-the-night moments, though the film isn't as horror/sci-fi-centric as you might expect.
Overall, just fairly... meh.
