THEOREMS ON THE STUDENT LOAN CANCELATION

But there’s an even deeper logic at work. Young voters tend to drop off a lot in mid-term elections, and Biden has just given the college cohort a reason to turn out this fall—especially if a judge inhibits this blatant vote-buying scheme. Nate Silver (or “Nate Bronze” as I call him) Tweeted the quiet part out loud:

It is not necessary to go beyond the vote-buying motivation to explain this move—but I can! As John reported here not long ago, college enrollment is dropping fast. Given that the left regards universities as a key bastion of power and influence, you can consider this move as merely one step in an ongoing bailout for a key leftist institution. Needless to say, all institutions will move to capture subsidies (like car companies raising prices for electric vehicles after the IRA passed last week), and the high cost of higher education has been driven in part by past government subsidies, such as student loans, etc. Colleges will now feel less pressure to restrain future tuition hikes.

Want to see one small example of how this can fall out? At American University in Washington DC, support staff are out on strike this week, demanding higher wage and benefit increases than AU has offered. This week also happens to be move-in week for new students. Here’s one view on how it’s going:

like the rent suspension situation ... it keep going until the administration gets the smack down, then they do it again with different wording, until that gets smacked down

then ' look at those evil republicans '

this is a play for Mid Term Votes ...... after that this issue is dead

Yep, they really could care less about student loan forgiveness. They just want to point at the republicans for getting it smacked down. It’s all theatrics.

The media makes people believe this is so easy. They get their headline out and see how its received. People with college debt won't be checking their loan accounts today to see if 10K has dropped off. The announcement was theatre to make people believe the democrats will be giving them money for their vote.

Since the average college loan debt is hovering around 30K, forgiving 10K of it isn't going to have much effect on the immediate purchasing habits of the debtors.

About the actuality of the situation instead of the why, does this situation require a solution? Is there a real problem that requires relief or is this just a redistribution program.

Oddly enough, you've hit smack on our situation - but that's actually after paying it down from around 80k down to 30k. It really will help a lot.

It also helps that monthly payment is reduced to 5% of monthly income, instead of 10.

I feel awful for my oldest daughter...she focused like a laser on paying off her very large college debt, achieving her goal only a year ago, at age 37. The POS Vegetable-in-Chief just cheapened the hell out of her accomplishment.

Dummy. If she was lazy and self-centered, she might have had a portion paid off for her.

I have changed my mind. I am all for loan forgiveness, but you have to turn in your diploma since you obviously aren't using it.

The peace corps, the military, and even some civil service positions would pay back a portion or all of it. One of my good friends has over 100k, got a sports therapy degree (still paying for it), didn't make very much at it, drove a truck for 10 years because it paid more, then got an engineering degree. I will say 10k off his will help out with the total paid back and the amortization of interest.

Just a year ago Pruneface from Frisco was saying Biden did not have the authority to do this.
