There is no USS GERALD R. FORD

It is pre commissioning unit (PCU) GERALD R. FORD (CVN-78). A United States Navy vessel is not a USS until it has passed sea trials and is commissioned. The ship is scheduled for christening soon, but that does not make it a USS. I wish the press would get it right, but that is not likely to happen.

That is unless the Navy does things differently since I retired.

Technically you're correct, however, it is well known that once it's commissioned, the name will be USS Gerald Ford. By the way, when they approved the budget, it is for the carrier to be known as USS Gerald Ford.
