Matthew 12:38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Are we an adulterous generation? Compared to the generation I grew up in.... we are what my grandmother would have called "heathens". I grew up in the 50's. I often wondered why bandits didn't work on Sunday mornings.... people were all at church and all the homes were vacant.
Humans have been dealing with impure spirits since before Moses brought the 10 Commandments down from the mountain to find humans dancing around a cow!
The result of a failed generation is one that is so wicked it would allow children to be shot to death in the schoolhouse! Why not even the writers of Paladin would consider having a gunman murder the children in the schoolhouse! It just wasn't done! It just wasn't fit for TV.
The impure spirit is the cause of so many people failing rehab. We clean the toxins from the drugs and alcohol and get their head clear again.... and then they go home...... clean and ready to start a new life.... only to find they are facing the same world they left.... and it seems to be worse every time they fail at sobriety... which makes them feel like losers, so they get in deeper.
There are those out there who would point at abortions and gay marriages and call us the adulterous generation. Are we as common as Salome, Herod's stepdaughter, who danced for the head of John the Baptist?
There are other signs we are indeed an adulterous generation. Priests are raping our children and preachers are picking the pockets of their flock so they can drive the nicest cars and live in crystal palaces. Preachers are sleeping with the women in the church, calling them insane, and then throwing them out of the church when they are caught.
The Pharisees wanted a sign from Jesus.... but they were carrying around billboards.
Here's your sign. It's up to you to replace the unclean spirit with goodness and kindness.
