Luke 11:29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.
33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Good morning. How will you do at Judgement? In yesterday's verses, Luke told us [Verse 16] some of the people in the crowd asked for a sign. Jesus was driving a demon out of a man, and an onlooker said Jesus was working for Satan, since all the demons seemed to know who Jesus was.
Luke 11:16 "Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven."
Jesus said the Queen of the South [probably the Queen of Sheba] went to Solomon for advice. Jesus told the people she would be at Judgement, and she would point the ignorant morons who demanded a sign. Jesus said those people would be judged for their ignorance. She traveled all the way from Ethiopia just to learn something new from Solomon. Solomon was a "wise" king. She would testify these people who asked for a sign from Jesus were stupid! Jesus was even greater than Solomon. Solomon was the "smart" son of David. Jesus was the Son of God!
Jesus told them they wouldn't like the sign. Jesus reminded them Jonah was a sign, and the people of Nineveh repented. Jesus told the people in the crowd asking Him for a sign, they wouldn't like it He showed them a sign. They were all to ignorant to understand the sign. The people of Nineveh figured it out and turned things around. Jesus saw no sign from the people showing they were willing to discuss repentance, let alone repent.
Quite frankly I didn't understand the lamp verses until I went blind in one eye. I can relate to the darkness Jesus was talking about though.
When I had both eyes, I could crochet with black yarn. It was no problem. Then, I lost the light in my right eye. The doctor offered to make my vision 80% better with retinal surgery and instead, he blinded me. Since then, my life is darker than it was.... a lot darker. I run into walls in a well-lit room. I stumble over the stupidest stuff. I would have seen all that before, but now... it's like I live in a tunnel, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I actually see the world through a sphere now. Without the right eye, my panoramic vision of the world around me shrunk to a darker sphere. Everything I want to see is either too dark or it's outside the tunnel.
Yesterday, Hubby gave me a new pair of glasses. They have lights! I can crochet with black yarn again!
Jesus is like the lights on my glasses! With Jesus, I can deal with whatever is just outside this tunnel.
Jesus said those people were too blind to see just how spectacular Jesus really was/is.
They didn't have glasses back then, let alone glasses with lights at the temples.
They couldn't see!
