Mark 6: 6 Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”
12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
Matthew the tax collector told us how the disciples were split up. I found it interesting that the Zebedee boys were together. Simon Peter was with his brother John. I guess Simon the Zealot and Judas didn't have brothers, and that's why they were teamed up. Simon the Zealot despised the Roman conquering government. Judas just wanted to count coins. What a sermon they would have preached! I'm sure Judas started out an active member of the party of Jesus, but towards the end, I think the true of expense of caring for the sick and poor got to him. I keep remembering the last family reunion I went to. I come from a big family in Front Royal, Virginia. That's where my mom was born. Anyway, my uncles and aunts were talking about the family church. They wanted to raise some funds. I asked them why they needed money. They said they needed to do some repairs. They said without money the building would fall down. I told them if God wanted the building, it would not fall down. "God will provide" was not the answer they wanted. They scoffed at me.
Jesus told the original evangelists [the twelve disciples] not to take a change of clothes. He wanted them to depend on the message.
Leave your earthly provisions behind. Take nothing with you but the clothes on your backs and the shoes on your feet and a staff. They couldn't buy the world a coke, they had no cash. They had to depend on the message.
They were sent out two by two.... and all they had was the message.
They had to depend on the message.
