They should feed the squatter to the Gators.

Armed Florida man confronts squatter who took over house while he was overseas

Ocala homeowner slept in closet in effort to catch suspected squatter

An alleged squatter was arrested in Florida after a homeowner fresh off a seven-month trip to New Zealand said he returned to his house and found it trashed and burglarized.

Authorities with the Marion County Sheriff's Office arrested Ze'Moye Brown on Friday after the unidentified homeowner in Ocala confronted the man and fired a gun in an attempt to get the suspect to leave, according to a sheriff's office affidavit reviewed by Fox News Digital.

The homeowner told authorities that when he returned home from his trip, he found his home in disarray and several items were missing. He reported the incident to police.

Later that same day, the homeowner slept in a closet in the home in an attempt to catch the squatter. The homeowner's alarm went off at 8 p.m., and he saw Brown peeking into the closet where he was sleeping, according to the affidavit.

The homeowner shouted at Brown to leave the residence, and the two reportedly began arguing about who actually owns the home. According to the affidavit, the homeowner used his Beretta handgun to fire a shot at his front door in an attempt to get Brown to leave.

Brown fled the residence and called authorities, saying he was shot. Brown also said he owned the home he was squatting in, according to Fox 35.

I don't understand the concept of "squatter's rights". It seems to me if someone breaks into your home, that's basic breaking and entering. It doesn't mean they now own the home. In fact under Stand Your Ground you should be able to shoot them to death.

I'm not certain, and dont' have time to spend searching the web for snippets, but I think it had something to do with "abandoned" homesteads in the 19th century or before.

Whatever the reason, it's lost its value and needs to be nullified.

I am a homeowner in Fla. which has gun laws that favor the homeowner and I do have a gun and a stranger to me comes into my home he can take his argument to the Funeral director.

If someone breaks into a home, they immediately get arrested.

But when someone is living in a home illegally, the police say it's a civil matter and has to be dealt with by the courts. It's just like someone with a lease that isn't paying their rent. The rules seem to be aligned with the rights of the renter over the rights of the landlord. Then the pandemic made it worse when the government told renters they couldn't be evicted for non payment of rent.

The thought that first came to my mind is why you would go away for an extended period of time and not have anyone checking on your home? And/or a good alarm system?
I mean, it's a shame this happened but I think the homeowner should have taken more precautions knowing he would be gone that long.

Didn't Gilligan say something about a trip? I always wanted to live by the beach.
