So I'm reading through the forums at the advertisements for dogs and cats, lost and found etc, and I find so many ads about dogs that are so good and so well behaved, good with kids etc, but people are selling them or giving them away for various reasons. Ads for puppies, purebred, designer, or mutts. Ad's for whatever different reason for people getting rid of animals. I don't think that people nowadays realise that animals are not just indespensible objects that you can just get rid of when you feel like. I work in a local shelter and I see so many animals come and go for different reasons and it pains me to see the ones where people just didn't think before they went ahead and bought that cute little puppy, or people that "just don't have the time to work with" the young dog that won't listen to them, or people that believe that getting their dog spayed or neutered is mean or taking away their manhood or not fair or whatever pathetic reason you give. The over population of animals is not going to stop until people realise that there doesn't need to be any more puppies or kittens coming from dogs or cats that shouldn't be bred in the first place, either because of health or temperament issues, not to mention they are just adding to the over population. millions of animals are euthanized every year due to overpopulation, shelters can't keep animals forever, there should be some sort of laws on breeding, and spaying and neutering and animal ownership.
Please share your views on the subject of animal ownership, spaying and neutering.

I adopted an 8 year old dog from CAWL. I currently have a retard dog staying with me for the weekend that was adopted from the shelter. I have a cat that was found on the side of the road that weighed less than a pound and it's an assbite. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Just something funny about retard and assbite in same sentence.

Okay seriously, people do tend to get animals not realizing what they are getting into. My dog Milo is like family and as many times as I would want to put a round between the eyes I love him when he looks at me with the puppy eyes.

What about the people who buy dogs to breed only. I constantly see an ad in the classified from a person in Hughesville/Mechanicsville selling Yorkies. I think it is horrible for this person to get away with this.

When my DH and I lived in VA, we went to the pound and found a dog that we really liked. She was 4 months old and was turned in because she didn't listen to what she was told. Come on, she was only 4 months old. What did they expect? I just don't understand where people get their ideas of raising dogs? I guess they really didn't like her. She was the sweetest dog and ended being with us until the ripe old age of 15 because we had to put her down because she couldn't walk anymore. She had arthritis very badly.

A friend of mine bought a baby lovebird and raised this bird and took care of it like it was a human baby for 2 months. It recently bit her and now she is done with the bird. To keep her from doing the unthinkable, I told her I would take it. I need another animal like I need a hole in my head but I can't let her just get rid of it like that. At least with me I know it will be taken care of.

I have four "found cats".

I have a min pinscher that we recently just adopted from a shelter within the last month. We were lied to probably on ten instances on this min pinscher and we still kept her. Among the lies.... well it was very important that the dog we got be no older than 4 because we had to put down a dog in november, a cat down 9 days later in december of last year and a dog in january of this year. We have a two year old son that would like an animal to stick around for awhile so that is why it was so imporant we got a dog that was "younger", well "britney" according to the shelter was 4, well the vet they took her to told me they told the shelter she was about 6, my vet says between 6 and 7. They told me she got along with cats...... well she doesnt and we are still working on it (on a side note, it was funny this evening, we were again trying to introduce the cats to britney and it didnt go well to say the least and britney ended up with a claw stuck in her head). They told me she was house trained, and again, they were wrong.... We will take her out for a walk and she will pee as soon as she comes in. Anyway, we are in it for the long haul, it is stressful at times, but we love her and wouldnt trade her for the world!

I also have a Min Pin and she too will do that about peeing in the house as soon as you come back in. She is allowed in the house, but only if we have her in our sight and if she is not in our sight she is crated, even if its just for two minutes, or she will run to my carpet ( I mean she makes a literal B-line for it too) and take a pee on it. My bedroom is the only carpeted room in the house too. She gets along with our cats and in fact ignores them, but they turn into instant bottle brushes when she gets anywhere near them even though she has never bothered them. She is 11 yrs. old and has recently developed liver and thyroid problems so she is getting a little slower and chunky. When she finally does go to doggy heaven I will be beside myself with grief. She is the sweetest little dog you would ever want to meet. I would not trade her for anything in the world either. :huggy:

We are thinking about crating her, I just dont know what kind of life she had before me (again another "lie") for all I know she was in a crate her whole life, one lady at the shelter told me they got her from PG county Animal Control and another lady on a different day told me she was an owner surender (and both times they couldnt find her file) only because they told me she was at a foster home and the foster had her file, but I made four suprise visits in addition to the two scheduled visits and each time she was at the shelter and not the foster, sooo.......

I just keep trying to work with her, we have a bissell spot bot and we are seriously getting our moneys worth out of it, but it does get on your last nerve, especially if we walk her in the morning and then are on the way out the door to work and all of a sudden you either walk in a nice little wet spot or smell an awlful stench (like this morning).

I wonder what it is about them that makes them just do what they want? I think she will get along with the cats, and usually the cats are pretty cool with the dogs I have had in the house, but she has tormented them through the bedroom doors, it will take a bit of time to get their trust. She has been "attacked" by two of them so far, but every day I try to introduce them for a few minutes either before or after work and hopefully within the next 10 years or so they will get along! lol

I'm sorry to hear that your doggy is having health problems. Actually one of the reasons that we decided on her was after reading up on them, they seem to have very little health issues, other than my girl being slightly overweight (when I got her she was 16 pounds) and she I have had her she has gained 3 pounds, my vet said to put her on a diet!

Aww she is really pretty! I love the black and tan! Cayenne is red. She is my red hot chili pepper!

Try a spray bottle with one part listerine and 3 parts water in it and when she goes after the cats squirt her good! The listerine won't hurt her, but it leaves a foul taste in their mouths that they HATE when they go to clean it off! I pretty much just have to pick up my bottle now a days and the critters all head for cover! :lmao:

Here's a pic of Cayenne:

That wouldnt burn their eyes if it got in there? I guess I just try to baby her more because I just dont know her past. Cayenne is a interesting name, and she is pretty, and she is a big girl too, that makes me feel better because at the vet the tech had a min pin too and that dog weighed all of 7 pounds and I thought he looked too skinny.

Take the stick out of you azz, and relax.

Calling someone that owns SEVEN cats a stinky crazy cat lady is disrespectful? Since when?

Next time you want to have a battle of wits, please arm yourself prior.

Well, I try not to aim for eyes!

She was 14 lbs about a few months ago and she was too thin, her backbone was showing and it was when she had just started her thyroid meds and just before we found out about the liver problem too. Since getting on both meds and regulating her diet she has gained back to a whopping 16.9 lbs. Now the vet says slow down on the food. :ohwell: Figures!

I am not stinky, I have 5 littermaids and 3 more very well maintained litter boxes. I do NOT let my house smell of animals. My mother had no clue I had 7 cats and she is a white glove inspector! Bob, are you haning out with DoWhat in your spare time? You seem to be getting as crotchedy as he is! :lmao:

I KNOW what you mean. My boyfriend and I have 3 rescues and one dog that we actually wanted. Our pit bull was rescued when she was a puppy. Her owner made the mother have a litter and when he couldn't sell the last puppy, he was going to take it to the pound. My boyfriend brought her home. One cat I found at the dump when she was a baby. The other cat was found when he was homeless in VA. He was even spayed and had his claws removed.

What kind of person has a cat's claws removed, then kicks him out??
