Think I found my next car.

Not sure when, might not be for a while but after test driving one today, I'm about 99% I'll be hunting for a 2006 M3 convertible.

Fun stuff. I loved the M Roadster I was keeping for a buddy....wish I could have afforded to add it to the herd.

I was looking at the M3 as well. Even used it's outside my budget.

I've been looking at a Fiat, new this year, that uses a Miata frame/hardware with an upgraded motor. Maybe in a year or two.

Having a midlife crisis, are we?

Ha, since 2003, it's been a 360hp Neon with a wing and a huge intercooler, then a 425hp bright red Charger with 20 inch forged wheels and red brake calipers, this would actually be the most "adult" looking car I've owned since I was 39 :) Never was a convertible guy til we got one for the son, now I like that.

Well, you can find the ones I'm looking at for under $20,000 all day long. A bit harder if you want the convertible and a real stick shift, not the "Yeah, I got a stick, but no clutch pedal...." SMG transmission. Most are under 100,000 miles and so have an easy 100,000 miles of life or more. Of course, this only makes sense if you can do any repairs yourself. Paying someone $250 for a brake job that essentially the same as the $100 one on a Chevy, and paying them %30 more on parts, that would make this choice not so good.

Yeah, pretty sure getting into and out of that would add another partner to my back docs office. Too much sacrifice of comfort in the name of performance. Sort of like the difference between the Huey and the Cobra. Buddy of mine recently got one of those for his son, except supercharged....... not sure how thats gonna work out, since the kids Miata went down in a crash.

The M Roadster I was keeping for a friend was supercharged/intercooled and had a "short track" gear ratio change, along with some other suspension mods for racing. It was a very hot little car...

I had an RT Neon with I think ~150hp, and while people gave me a lot of #### for driving a Neon it was a fun car. And I put 170k miles on it with the only repair being a new fuel pump that took me literally 15 minutes to replace.

With the rate I went through tires, I can't imagine what it would have cost to keep a 360hp Neon nicely shod.

I started with the 2003 SRT, which was about 215 to the wheels (SRT guys tuned very conservatively, testing for "score" using crappy CA 91 octane gas, 100 ambient temp, off the charts humidity, so it was a given that under decent conditions with good gas, you could get rated on a dyno at the wheels) and added all three Mopar upgrade kits, the last of which replaced the fuel pump, injectors, and turbo with one with a Ti-Al lightweight turbine for fast spool. Had a special button you could press to load a tune meant for 100 octane race gas. That's' when you got 360, on street gas it was "only" 310 or so :) Oh, and got a part named after me, after harassing one of our vendors to make a certain kind of intercooler :) Guy called it the Wuss intercooler because I refused to remove the front crash bar to fit a larger one :)

Tires were good for about a year or so, kept it in the 220-240 tread wear range. Being not enamored of burnouts, I actually didn't wear them out too fast. Oddly enough, the M vert only weighs 200lbs or so more than the Neon SRT. So, light weight, rear wheel drive, over 300hp, manual transmission, awesome feeling inline six, if you love to drive, it checks all the boxes.

The Jeep Renegade?

I'm afraid that Fiat is going to charge such a premium (especially for the upgraded turbo engine) that it's going to get you close to 40K for one of those, if not over. Base, no options.

Yeah, probably. I'll worry about that when I actually have money.

Dunno know why getting a factory Miata with around 230ish hp and torque has never been a thing. Those numbers would turn that car from great into the sublime, IMO.

Ended up calling that guy for other reasons, asked him how it was going. Said. "Odd you should ask, it was great for 30 days, then he hydroplaned heading to Baltimore and totaled it".
