For a decade now we've been chronicling the emergence of cougars in the dating jungle: women, usually over 40, who hunt younger men, or cubs, and shower them with a tantalizingly experienced kind of love — and lots of Abba music. There are cougar celebrities — 47-year-old Demi Moore married 32-year-old Ashton Kutcher — cougar books, cougar cruises and, perhaps the ultimate affirmation, cougar sitcoms, including the popular Cougar Town, starring real-life cougar Courteney Cox. What further proof do we need of this species' existence?

Michael Dunn isn't buying it. The noted psychology researcher at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff has just released a study that he insists renders the cougar craze a "myth." After examining the age preferences expressed in 22,400 singles ads on popular dating websites in North America, Europe, Australia and Japan, he found no sizable cohort of women seeking younger men. To the contrary, the share of lionesses wanted men their own age or older. Nor did he find evidence for the proliferation of cubs: the overwhelming majority of men displayed their eons-old preference for younger women. "I do believe the cougar phenomenon is a myth and, yes, a media construct," Dunn, who specializes in human evolutionary psychology and mating behavior, told the Australian Associated Press.

Come to think of it though..my now-ex left me fer a feller that is 8 years older than me (and her) and is now, after dumping him, getting married to one that is 'only' 6 years older than me (and her). So maybe there is something to that article..

I think our tastes change over time. When in my 20s, I thought 20 some-things attractive and 40 some-thing (interested men) creepy. Now in my 40s, 40 some-things are attractive and 20 some-things look like little children. Men with a little mileage are more self-confident and comfortable with themselves which is also attractive in itself. They are more experienced with life in general. Oh, and their usually better conversationalists too.

Well, I would agree in most of what you are saying and perhaps this is true pertaining to the men, just not the ones I come in contact with. I'm over 40 and I know I don't think the same as I did when I was 20. I can't say the same for the men my age and older. The one's I have been subjected to behave like they did when they were in their 20's. Not sure what happened there. Play stupid games, unreliable, tell stupid lies for no reason, play with people's emotions, and these are men in their 40's and 50's. I know a few men in their 60's and 70's who are just looking for a "good time girl". Hell, the one's in their 40's and 50's sometimes are just looking for a "good time girl". I wouldn't call that self-confident, I'd call that "a player". Confident men have balls. I think these clowns have been castrated!!!

You are correct!!! Women are led to believe that men don't play games and are more mature the older they get. So not true!!!

I like younger guys. My man is 24 and I'm 40. We've been together for 2 years. He's one of the best people I know.

The social stigmas of women dating men younger than themselves vs. men dating women younger than themselves will always be skewed.

I find women older than myself attractive because most women at my age are more mature and have already passed the "girls just wanna have fun" stage of their lives. Unfortunately that means they're used goods by then, but at the end of the day what really matters is their ability to maintain a healthy, lasting relationship. Noone is perfect.
