John 15:18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’

Here's a link to the commentary I read.
If the world hates you: Jesus told the disciples that the world would often hate them. As wonderful as Jesus was and His message was, they should expect to be rejected when Jesus departed, just was much as they were often opposed while Jesus was with them.
You know that it hated Me before it hated you: Jesus hoped to comfort the disciples with the knowledge that the world’s hatred was first directed toward Him. Jesus attracted attention from great multitudes and devotion from individuals of all kinds; yet as a whole, the world hated Jesus.
Because you are not of the world: Jesus said this both as a fact and an explanation. This further explained why the world would hate the disciples of Jesus. It was also to be a factual description of the disciples — that in many ways they were different than the world.
If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you: Jesus was mostly persecuted by the religious establishment, which mainly reflected the values and goals of the world in opposition to God. One may be religious and very much part of the world.
If they kept My word, they will keep yours also: “The force of the last clause in this verse is well brought out by Knox ‘they will pay the same attention to your words as to mine; that is, none’.” (Tasker)
Now they have no excuse for their sin: Because Jesus did come to and speak to the world, they knew something of God that they did not know before. This made them without excuse for hating and rejecting Jesus and His Father in heaven. Jesus did among them the works which no one else did, and they still hated and rejected Him.

The Online Bible I get the text from titled these verses "The World Hates the Disciples".
I am reading from the Book of Daniel, the John's Gospel, John's letters, and Revelation. I'm looking for "End Times" prophecies.
Daniel said Jesus had to leave so He can come back. He has to arrive, teach, heal, raise the dead, and be sent to the Cross in order to leave. John is the best Human Friend of Jesus. So, I'm reading the Gospel of John [not the other Gospels at this time] because I think John knew and understood Him best.
This lecture from Jesus, about why the people hate the Disciples, happened right after the Last Supper on the way to the Garden where Jesus will be arrested.
The Pharisees and the Sadducees hated Jesus because they didn't know who Jesus' father was. They thought Joseph was His father. After all, Mary was now married to Joseph. But Joseph didn't put his name on Jesus Certificate of Birth. So, Jesus showed no tie to the Jewish traditions because they couldn't track His bloodline back to Abraham. They wouldn't have used Mary's bloodline... she was just a woman. There had to be a Jewish man's name on the Certificate or Jesus was a Bastard and Mary would be labeled a whore. Jesus had no Jewish man's name on the Certificate of Birth. He could not be labeled by a specific "tribe". Someone has to die. Bastards were not allowed.
The people were looking for the Messiah. They wanted the Messiah to come down and clear out the Romans who were currently occupying Jerusalem. They wanted a Messiah to reunify Israel. They wanted a warrior. They thought Jesus was the man. But, alas, as it was mistakenly reported, Jesus was a Nazarene. The Messiah had to be from Bethlehem. They knew Joseph was from Bethlehem but all the babies, who would be about Jesus' age now, had been slaughtered by King Herod's soldiers because the Wise Men told the king that Jesus was to be king. King Herod [the first one not the who murdered John the Baptist] did not want to lose his throne.
Jesus walked on water, healed a paraplegic, fed multitudes off of one little boy's fish sandwich, and brought Lazarus back from the tomb. Still the people couldn't believe Him to be the Messiah because either He was a Bastard and Mary a whore, or He was the lowly everyday son of Joseph a Nazarene Carpenter, which would make Jesus a liar, according to the reports.
The Temple Vendors hated Jesus because He ran them out of the Temple, spilled their precious money, and ran off their best livestock. They probably claimed they couldn't pay their taxes to Rome because of what Jesus did. The event in the Temple that day made the leaders in the Temple, the financial leaders, and the Roman leaders all angry at one time. It was a triple decker event that led to a lot of contempt!
Rome hated Jesus because He drew crowds. The people actually laid palm branches in front of His donkey, singing Hosanna as if He was a famous king arriving in Jerusalem. Rome could not allow such a spectacle. The people wouldn't accept Roman rule if they didn't teach this man with no name not to mess with Rome.
Almost everyone hated Jesus by the time Jesus left the Last Supper to walk up to the Garden where He would be arrested.
Even some of the people who were following Jesus would disavow Jesus in public because they might be thrown out of the Temple for being His follower. It's surprising how one political party will inflate when it's unpopular to be affiliated with the powerless political party.
Jesus was going to go away for a while. While He was gone... the people would have no one to hate on.... accept those who Believed in Jesus.
I bet Thomas was shaking in his shoes. Thomas, also known as Didymus, was Jesus' earthly twin. He looked just like Jesus. If Jesus left, the target would be squarely on Thomas's back. Did Thomas go into hiding? Did Thomas offer to put his life on the line for Jesus? Did Thomas feel the heat? I was raised to believe Thomas doubted Jesus. Did Thomas doubt Jesus or did he doubt that he was no longer in danger because Jesus had nasty looking scars Thomas didn't have.
Today.... "Christians" are hated because the Pew Sitters are mistaken for Christians. The Pew Sitters act as though they are better than everyone else. They claim to know something no one else knows but they haven't really read and understand the truth so they are just spouting fake gospel blurted out by men who would defile young women and men while claiming to be "holy" examples to be followed.
My Online Bible calls these verses "The World Hates the Disciples".
When we become Christians, Believers of Jesus the Messiah, Son of the One and Only Living God, we are Adopted into the Family of God. We become Brothers and Sisters in Christ. We are called. We are chosen. We said yes to Adoption.
We are not just Pew Warmers.
We are hated because Pew Warmers are mean, hateful, pious pricks who are running people out of the church.
People hate us because of the Pew Warmers! We are not Pew Warmers. We are chosen.
Christians are disciples.
This is why people hate us.
