This makes me sick

Post from SoMD Alerts on FB...

A person driving a truck left this rottweiler in this cage last night on Animal Shelter Rd, in Hughesville, MD. There were drop off cages 10 feet away that are heated, but they chose not to use them. As a result, this dog froze to death. You can see where it tried to chew through its cage before it died. If anyone knows someone in this area who had a rottweiler yesterday with this type of cage and drives a truck and doesn't have it this morning, please call Tri-County Animal Shelter at (301) 932-1713.

The person who reported finding the animal had this to say:

"my husband left for work this morning and saw thr cage sitting there so he went to investigate and found this! The truck was a lower truck.. not tall.. i wanna say a chevy style. . Id definitely know it if i saw it.. they dropped it around 10-11 last night. . I saw the cafe in the truck when they passed my house goin really slow.. thats what made me look in the first place then they sped out. I assumed the dog was put in the night cages. If only i had known. ."

(I don't have any further details at this moment.)

It's sad to know that there are people like that in this world.
Absolutely sickening.

Agreed. Even if they had no idea there were heated cages available (which I've never really heard of before, but I live in Fl), you just don't drop off animals in way freezing weather.

Hopefully there is a special place in hell for the A$$hole who did this. He could have just dropped the dog off in the morning when the shelter was open.

Of course, I wish I hadn't read this but we all know there is unspeakable cruelty in the world. Carrier plastic is very hard. I can't believe that poor dog chewed it up that much. So, they gave the dog food but no blankets in the cage? We already know whoever did this is ignorant so I am sure they didn't check the weather. Why didn't they drop the dog off during operating hours? Aren't you allowed to turn over a dog to the shelter if you don't want it or cannot care for it anymore? Whoever did this is the lowest of the low. Hopefully, they can be found and charged with animal cruelty. Rest in peace beautiful dog.

I wonder if the dog was already dead when they dropped it off and this was their way of disposing it. Poor dog.

Is that a bowl of food in there? How on earth could that dog frantically try to chew it's way out of that cage without spilling that bowl of food? Where are the little shards of plastic from gnawing on the cage? Did the dog swallow them all?

I also thought what mitzi thought about the dog possibly being dead before they dropped it (in a previously chewed up crate), but then, why would there be a bowl of food in there?

I saw this on Facebook, and while on the surface the story seems beyond horrible...something about it just doesn't add up to me.

I agree with you NextJen. I think this is a hoax. I hope it's a hoax. The kibble is undisturbed. If an animal was chewing the kennel that aggressively, that food would be all over the place along with the plastic shavings.

I posted it a few times on FB myself. After reading what my friends posted and looking at the pics myself, I am going to assume that it's just hyped up at this point. Was there a dog dropped off in the road? Yes. Did it freeze to death? No. There is no way that a dog would have left that food bowl completely undisturbed while chewing through a kennel. I've seen a few people post that it looks like the kennel was chewed from the outside.

I am sure that the investigation report will be out in the next few days.

Sadly it appears to be true..

Animal shelter seeks information after dog dies at site

Hughesville, MD - A Rottweiler dog perished overnight Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the Tri-County Shelter on Animal Shelter Road in Hughesville when the former owner left it outside in sub-freezing temperatures, instead of putting the animal inside one of 10 heated cages provided by the shelter.

The person who left the animal between 10 and 11 p.m. was allegedly driving a pickup truck. A witness who saw the truck noticed it was a king cab, but little other information is known at this time.

Crystal Hunt, public information officer for Charles County, said she could confirm that a Rottweiler dog was left at the shelter late last night and did perish as a result of exposure.

“The Animal Shelter is conducting an investigation,” Hunt said. “It is an ongoing investigation. We are looking into the matter.

ok... I was not going to comment on this but....

as a vet tech here are my thoughts

1. dog was sick prior to being dropped off
a. parvo
b. chewed the crate several days ago and now has an intestinal blockage that could have perfed the intestines and the dog went septic
2. I do think the dog didn't pass due to the cold - but if the dog was alive the cold didn't help so it could have been secondary to the cold
3. I am unaware that Tricounty has "heated" drop off kennels.... unless they are hidden from the public I have only seen and used the covered shelter they have where they have chain link kennels for large dogs and a few kennels for cats and small dogs. they also usually have blankets there to place in the cages.
4. there is no little chunks of plastic on the ground or in the food or in the crate.... so I think the dog did that prior. also the size of the whole I do think the dog could have gotten out.

so my worry is if it was parvo that the pup passed from.... NOW who ever handled the dog (im sure not knowing) has now introduced the whole place to parvo. sigh.

as a vet tech this is seen all to often. I also understand that some people do care and will not look at the whole picture before pointing the finger.
now don't get me wrong.... if the dog was not utd on shots and ended up with parvo... shame on the owner
if the dog had an intestinal blockage and was sick for several days.... shame on the owner.

I would hope that in a case like this, they'd do a Necropsy.

That whole situation is just crazy sick. Why would they drop off a dead dog and just not bury the dog.

Didn't want to be bothered with digging a grave? No matter how the dog died, I don't believe it chewed that big hole in the crate and didn't knock over the food in the bowl.

Yes, it is all weird. It is like whoever dumped this poor poopie went back to stage it. The undisturbed food bowl doesn't seem right, and also the dog isn't contorted like in a struggle, but just seems asleep. Also, did anyone notice that there is a rubber clip end thingy (bungy cord) holding the cage together and the bolts are missing on the right side? I would think that the shelter would not put out a statement if they didn't think this situation was wrong. They certainly would not if they had something to do with it. I think the dog was dead when they brought it there. Poor dear poopie. :bawl: Also, I think ICIT is on to something.

I noticed the bungy cord too.
