Thorny plant

I discovered a weird sort of plant out in the brush behind my house. It must have been there last year because it looks like it's just starting to put out new growth this year. It's about 4 feet to 5 feet tall, no branches and thorns the whole length of it. 1/2 to 1 inch long and hard. The new growth looks like the tip of an asparagus. In fact the whole thing looks like a giant asparagus from hell. I pulled it all up pretty easily. Anyone know what it is?

It's Asparagillis thorensis. It's a tropical plant that made it's way here from the shores of South America. It's not poisonous, but it will prick you if you get too close. It typically grows 4-5' tall at maturity, and dies back over the winter. They spread through rhizomes under the soil, so you'll soon have a natural fence or hedgerow. :yay:

Kill them all.

Absolutely, very invasive and they have the only throns I seen worse than a pryrocanthia...

I have a bunch of them in my yard (now that I know what you're talking about..). They actually do make good walking sticks if you find one that's about 6 feet tall and sturdy.

If you need more walking sticks you're welcome to them!

That's it. Thanks.

YW! When I first moved in, and spotted them comming-up. I thought I had stumbled upon an exotic rose

Walking sticks are nasty and certainly not good as walking sticks since they have scads of sharp thorns. To use one as a walking stick you'd need to wear welders gloves.

I'm one who's advocates getting rid of them!

How do you kill them? Just pull them up?

As Cowgirl said, they sprout out of their roots. If you pull them-up you have to get all of the root, which would be a PIA!

I've cut then off about a foot above the ground, then brush some un-dilluted "Brush-be-Gone" on the open stalk.

Crimeny!! No one has ever heard of using shaping knives and sandpaper???? I'm not dumb enough (contrary to popular opinion...) to grab those things!!!
