(BOONSBORO, MD) — Maryland State Police are on the scene of a four-vehicle crash in Washington County that has claimed the lives of three people and injured two others.

Three victims have been pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. One additional injured victim was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the UMD R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and another was transported by ambulance to the Meritus Health Hospital in Hagerstown. The identities of the victims are being confirmed, but will not be released until families are notified.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. today, Maryland State Police from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to a report of a traffic crash on Rt. 40 at Mt. Lena Road, near Boonsboro. Troopers and fire/EMS personnel arrived to find four vehicles involved in the crash.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded to conduct an investigation and detailed crash reconstruction. Details of how the crash occurred, including the cause of the crash, remain under investigation.

Due to the fatalities, injuries, and extensive crash scene, troopers had to close Rt. 40 in both directions. MDOT State Highway Administration CHART personnel responded and established a detour around the scene. Troopers expect Rt. 40 to be closed at that location through this evening’s rush hour.

Additional information will be provided when it becomes available following the preliminary investigation.
