(BETHESDA, MD) — Maryland State Police are investigating three tractor trailer crashes today on the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, which preliminary information indicates were all caused by speed too great for conditions.

Shortly after 10:00 a.m. today, Maryland state troopers from the Rockville Barrack were dispatched to the report of a crash on the inner loop of I-495 at Rt. 355. Responding troopers found a tractor trailer was off the roadway and down an embankment. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash. The driver reported that he was not injured.

At about 1:14 p.m. today, troopers from the Rockville Barrack responded to a crash involving a tractor trailer on the outer loop of I-495 at Bradley Avenue. Troopers found the tractor trailer left the roadway and struck the jersey wall. A passenger in the truck tractor reported a possible injury. No other vehicles were involved.

Minutes later, Rockville Barrack troopers responded to a crash on the outer loop of I-495 at Connecticut Avenue. Troopers found a tractor trailer and a car were involved in that crash. No injuries were reported and both vehicles have been moved to the shoulder of the road.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division have responded to each scene to assist with the investigations. The preliminary investigation at each scene indicates the tractor trailer drivers were driving too fast for conditions. Charges have not been filed at this time.

Assistance at the scenes is also being provided by county fire/EMS units and the Maryland Department of the Environment. MDOT State Highway Administration CHART personnel responded to assist with lane closures.

Last week, Maryland State Police contacted Drivewyze, a commercial vehicle driving app, and requested a warning message be issued to all commercial vehicle drivers moving through this area about the need to obey speed limits. In addition, warnings have been posted by the MDOT State Highway Administration.

Maryland State Police have been conducting increased speed enforcement in that region for the past week. Drivers anywhere, but especially on the Capital Beltway, are urged to obey the speed limit. Remember, speed limits are set for ideal driving conditions. During inclement weather, drivers should reduce speeds as appropriate for the conditions.
