Thunder/Lighting

Our dog gets scared to death during thunderstorms. She crawls into the smallest spaces she can find and just cowers down and shakes. Any suggestions to help her feel more comfortable during storms? She's a newly rescued 4 or 5 year old golden retriever.

As long as shw is not aggressive during her moment of fear, try to sit with her in a calming manner and soothe her while trying to get her to relax. I have done this with pups and it has helped.

Hmmm, I thought you weren't supposed to comfort them, that it would make them think it's ok to be scared? I was was just ignoring the behavior. Both my German Shepperd and Beagle are scared of thunder and gun shot sounds. They hide under the computer desk. If I'm out for a walk and it happens, I get pulled all the way home by the 75lb shepherd and 42lb beagle!

Unfortunatly I'm at work right now and my babies got tough this storm out on there own :(

I am open to any suggestions too...

Yes, when we're outside for a walk and it starts to thunder, she tries to hide under parked cars and then it's very difficult to get all 85 lbs of her back to the house.

I've tried comforting her, but she just turns into a different dog... she doesn't want any play things, she doesn't respond to her name... she just shakes and won't come out from her hiding spots.

Many people swear by "Rescue Remedy for Pets" which is a combination of herbs that calm pets but do not dope them up. Kind of takes the edge off.
I carry the product at my store. I know some health food stores may carry it as well. PM me for more info.

Benadryl. 25 mg for every 20 lbs of body weight. Each pill is 25 mgs. I use it every 4th of july on my dog. Helps calm him down but does not knock him out.

It knocks my little Sophie out!
Come to think of it, that stuff makes me extremely tired and loopy :dork:

That stuff is the bomb. I didn't know you carried it. I hope you remember to remind me about it I when I come back in to get the little one's food.

Yeah, I it depends on the size of the dog. I have a 180lb Mastiff, so what it does to him is different than what it will do to say a 20lb dog.

You really shouldn't try to comfort them. They'll think you're telling them it's ok to be scared. You should just ignore them and go about your business as though nothing is wrong. You could try to get one of those CDs with thunder sounds and play it very quietly at first. Once she gets comfortable with it, you can try turning it up. Of course, it's not exactly the same as the real thing, but it might help.

Every dog is different. I have comforted pups not dogs. If I have a pup that exhibits a fear of noise I comfort them and get them to interact with myself or others and their toys. After this is repeated a few times, I will take a pup to work with me at Andrews and take them out to the corner of the ramp so they can get up close and personal with lots of different noises. I have never had a bad experience with a dog and a firearm after taking them near jets and the noise from them. It helps that doves and other birds like being in the same area near the ramp. It helps to keep a Lab's attention.

How is your cute little angel? Please don't tell me "evil"- there's no way!

I decided her being evil was a direct result of being spoiled by the giant. :nono: She's actually learning real quick. Only issue is her big ears hear all kinds of things that are miles and miles away and she thinks it's right outside the front door.
