TiVo

For the last couple of weeks, our TiVo (V.2) has been hanging. Switching from TV to movies, checking programs, etc., it just hangs...no response. So I've been manually "power-cycling" (read unplugging it) and it gets going again. Only three times so far.

Tonight, it did it again. But this time it only gets as far as the start-up screen (not even as far as the little movie) and it restarts all by itself. Over and over again.

Any ideas or experience with this problem? For what I paid last spring, this MFPOS better not be broken already!!

Well I managed to retrieve the trapped DVD in the tray during the start-up phase, and now it's starting normally. The DVD is one we've watched before, no scratches, no fingerprints. The TiVo hung initially when we tried to watch the DVD.

Given the fact that TiVo utilizes Linux on the drive, could the DVD have been confusing it on start-up? Everything I found online focussed on transferring the drive to PC to diagnose. Screw that!

Was it porn? Maybe it just overheated.

Intersting. I noticed my Tivo Thursday night split programs into two parts when recording, never did that before. Also, today, the hack to set advance to 30 seconds had reset. This is the DirecTV Tivo, no DVD drive in it, but can record two shows at once.

Good luck. I don't think havinig DVD in should hurt if the machine was designed for DVD use. The OS would ignore it.

Update!

Called the Tivo folks and they're sending us a new Tivo. :yay: Very painless process. They said it should be here within the next couple of days, we then shove the defective Tivo in the box the new Tivo arrived in and send it back.

Pretty good customer service department. :yay:

Great news. With electronics you can't really expect 100% reliability and you definitely can't expect to never get a lemon, but you should be able to expect the problem to be taken care of with ease. Kudos to Tivo.
