Today's Project:

Sneakers

Just sneakin' around....
Discovered an interesting thing today. I wanted blue flame, that requires copper chloride. To make copper chloride, you soak copper wire in muriatic acid. I had both on hand, so over a week ago I started the process.

Today it was ready to start soaking blocks of wood, the muriatic acid had turned green. Used a pair of stainless steel cooking tongs. Almost immediately, the tongs turned copper. I thought the tongs were cheap plated copper and the acid burned off the coating. Turns out it was actually a layer of copper deposit over the stainless, like electroplating without the electricity. Rinsed it off in the sink, and most, but not all of the copper came off. The little bit that remained I could not get off even with steel wool, so it was bonded, but the rest wasn't.

Just an interesting tidbit.
