Tofu Shirataki Noodles

This is mostly for Dye Tied but I figured I'd share with the class.

They're fake noodles made out of tofu and yam starch. Low carb, zero fat, good fiber and protein, 8 oz = 40 calories.

I bought them online based on the Hungry Girl's recommendation. They come soft in a bag and must be refrigerated. When you first open them, the smell will about kill you. Think sushi that's past its prime.

So you rinse them REALLY well, then drain REALLY well, then microwave for a minute or so. Then you actually pat them dry with a paper towel to get ALL the moisture off them. This removes the stench and now they're just generic noodles.

They don't taste like anything. The texture is a bit chewy, almost like very thin tender calamari. Odd, but not unpleasant. I did a low-fat alfredo sauce and tossed it with broccoli. Ended up with this enormous plate of food that, had I eaten the whole thing, would have cost me around 400 calories but I was stuffed after half of it.

This is a reasonable noodle substitute if you're doing low carb or really any other kind of diet. They require some prep work to make them edible, but that's a small price to pay.

:lmao: If there was any description to NOT make me want something like that, boy, that was it. I'll keep the regular noodles, TYVM.

Yeah, trying to be honest because Hungry Girl didn't mention the stench, just the prep work needed. When I opened the bag, I realized why she said to go through all that rinsing and drying.

Thank you for filling me in. I still want to try them, even with the stench. Pasta and chips are 2 foods that are my triggers, so if I can eat pasta with less calories and carbs, I will give them a shot.

After I picked myself up off the floor from inhaling the "authentic aroma" I made the fettuccine tofu noodles with a light turkey alfredo sauce.

The texture is a bit strange but they weren't all that bad. Certainly different, but I'll try them again.
