This 124-Year-Old Patent Reveals The Right Way To Use Toilet Paper

The eternal debate over bathroom conventions seems to have actually been answered more than a century ago.

According to an 1891 patent by New York businessman Seth Wheeler, the end of a toilet paper roll should be on the outside, or in the “over” position. (Advocates of the “under” position, take note: better flip that roll over when you get home.)

Hate to burst anyone's bubble but the article does not provide any evidence that "over the top" is the intended method of operation. The illustration in the patent documentation is to show the device/concept in an operating configuration. Figure 1 in the article could have shown the paper end extending from the back of the roll as well as the front. The difference is in the ease of drafting. If the paper were shown extending from the back of the roll, the illustration would have be longer to shown the unseparated sheet(s) because they would have had to extend the length of the unrolled end completely below the body of the roll. Over the top the lines representing the sheet breaks could be shown across of the face of the roll - as shown. Unless there is text in the patent documentation that specifically states which way the paper unrolls that documentation does not resolve the debate.

:dude: AHA!! I knew I was right!! Over not under.

We had a cat when I was a kid, I don't ever remember her messing with the TP. When my kids were little, they didn't really pay attention to the TP, just the toilet and the wonderful things they could throw in it.
