Tomato and pepper plants

Lilacs are almost blooming, so it's almost time to put in tomato plants. Who's got the best deal on tomato plants? The Greenery or Wentworth's or someplace else?

Poppies are gonna bloom in a coupla weeks, and that's the signal to put in pepper plants, so who's got the best deal on pepper plants?

I stopped there yesterday and got 3 different types. They looked good, but were getting sold fast.

What is the best tomato to buy? I am buying ONE plant and using one of those upside down hangy things, as we have no luck growing them any other way.

That depends on what you 're looking for in a tomato. I lean toward big, slice-able, slightly acidic tomatoes, so I get things like Beefsteak. Better Boys and Big Boys are good, slightly more disease resistant. Not partial to early varieties, like the Early Girl, they just don't do it for me.

There are also two basic types of tomato vines, determinate and non-determinate. Determinate vines (not the tomatoes) grow just so big, then don't grow much more. Non-determinate can keep vining and growing all season. I'd suspect that a determinate variety might work better for the upside-down thingy, but it probably won't make much difference.

I got Better Boys, Marglobes and one other that I can't remember the name of.

Rutgers is a reliable plant, and try some Celebrities, very crack resistant.

I couldn't find Zimmerman's and Stauffers.

The Greenery didn't have tomato plants at all. Wentworth's had a very poor selection and they were all season-jumped ... much too big for planting this early but I bought three plants anyhow. Maybe they'll make it and maybe they won't.

Zimmermans is in Loveville, on the side of Route 5 It's past the MVA, but before you get to 243 (I think it is), if you're heading north from Leonardtown, on the left side of the road. Stauffers is just a wee bit past it. You have to watch for the signs. Or someone else can probably give you better directions.

I think you mean before you get to 247, 243 is at McDonald's as you leave Leonardtown.

The tomato plants at Lowes looked kind of unhealthy. I'll got to Zimmermans this week.

They got a new shipment of veggies this morning at Lowes. The ones that have been there for a few days looked really sad. I still need to try Zimmermans.
