Too early ?

Good Morning fellow gardeners, :coffee: I have a big sunny garden spot this year - approx 100' x 50' so I want to expand my usual assortment of veggies to include some things like collards, spinach , lettuce ... etc ... some info I have read says its not too early to plant, that they can withstand a light frost ... can anyone give me some advice ? TIA Hope everyone has a great day TGIF !! :howdy:

Yes, most cold weather plants like broccoli, cauliflower, and the like can go in the ground now. Just protect them from frost with either spunbound polyester row covers or a cloche.

You can make your own cheaper cloches by cutting the bottom off of plastic gallon milk jugs and leaving the tops on them. Just make sure you remove them as it heats up during the day or else you'll cook the plants.

I would wait to plant lettuce and spinach. They are not as hardy and don't germinate well in cold soil temps. BTW - our average frost-free date is April 15th.

Oh dear. I planted lettuce and onions yesterday. We did put some plastic sheeting over the tops of them, with spikes to keep them from touching the plants. I hope they are ok.

Started peppers inside this weekend. I hope they come up!

Rane, that sounds about like my garden size. First time I've planted a garden up here; I hope it grows.

Thanks for the advice Jazz ... my dad uses gallon milk jugs in his garden, of course he is in GA , where he always has a head start on me ... I wish April would get here so I can really get going in the garden ...

If anyone is interesting in buying things already started and transplanting them from the seedling pots to their garden instead - Southern States has started selling the stuff. Get there early though - it tends to get picked over. Saturday when I went the only thing they had left was some herbs, cauliflower?, and lots of lettuce. I bought a tray - 6 lettuce plants that I will transplant from the pots into my garden as soon as I figure out my blueprint for my garden  I can't wait for spring either :starcat::starcat:

Haven't had a chance to til the garden yet, much less plant anything. As the old Southern Maryland folks would say, "the sign just isn't right yet by God." Never could figure out what sign they were taking about.

I know spring is coming when I hear spring peepers. I heard them for about a week or two now

Probably Bill Engevals sign by the looks of my garden today. LOL Have you ever done a whole day's work, busted your butt, to step back and wonder just what in the world happened?
I worked all day in the garden putting up a new fence. We spent most of the time pulling up stubborn roots and only got 1/2 the fence put up. My sciatic is burning!

I need to plant some taters now! I forgot about taters! :starcat:
