Too sexy, too laid back, too independent... Why some women just AREN’T wife material


One man summed up his future bride as ‘the kind of woman you can take anywhere and be proud of’ — a sentiment echoed by many other men in the course of Molloy’s research. More than 30 per cent of the men Molloy interviewed who were about to get married said their family’s positive opinion of their future bride had helped them decide she was ‘the one’ — and most parents aren’t looking for an incredibly sexy or very attention-seeking spouse for their son.

There’s another good reason why men eschew sexiness in favour of other qualities when they look for a wife. ‘Men don’t look for very sexy wives, because — at a very basic animal level — they want to be sure the children they are raising are their own,’ explains psychologist Dr Jane McCartney, an expert in human behaviour and relationships. ‘Men are attracted to qualities such as loyalty, discretion and kindness when they look for a wife. Feisty and flirty is fine for a girlfriend. It’s just not what men want in life partners.

Just look at feisty, flirty, gorgeous Cameron Diaz. Men fall for her in their droves, yet she always ends up single again. If we believe Molloy’s thesis, Cameron’s just too sexy — on some deep, evolutionary level, the men she dates don’t believe she’ll stick around.

But while men apparently don’t want sexy wives, they do want women who take care of themselves. Molloy found women who are slim and well-groomed with nice hair and nails are prized, although those who wear revealing, attention-grabbing clothes are not.

Where do they come up with this crap? Sexy women get married all the time. Hell, party animals with, um, interesting pasts get married. Freaking hookers get married.

Most guys don't want to always have to be OTL for other guys hitting on their wives/girlfriends.

But there IS such a thing as "unattainable" for most guys; even if they say they can get any woman they want.

Sure, lots of guys want the centerfold; but just don't think they have what it takes to get one.
Many actually don't have what it takes. I am one of those guys; and I know that.

They pick on Pippa in the story, but we'll note that her sister - who paraded half naked down a runway and is extremely sexy - not only married, but married the future King of England.

Maybe she doesn't want to get married. Maybe she just hasn't met the right guy. Justin Timberlake isn't married, either. And it can't be that he's not sexy, because he brought sexy *back*. :snap:

but I understand what the writer is saying and have had conversations with guy friends that alluded to this..there is a girlfriend "type" and a wife "type" girlfriends are hot, they put out, they are "fun" party a lot that sort of thing..but they are cognizant of the fact that when they pick a wife, the criteria is different. It isn't that sexy women don't get married, but rather when choosing a partner thats not likely to be the biggest factor. Or that they are willing to trade a certain level of sexiness for other factors. Here, the writer does seem to confuse "sexy" and "slutty" because there are lots of sexy women who don't run around like tramps. At the same time, I am a firm believer in "there is someone for everyone" and some men love tramps :shrug: I have an uncle that loves crazy women. Like, certifiable, on several meds, crazy women.

I agree with that. I would never marry some guy who puts out. If he does it for me, he's done it for any number of women, and nobody wants a slut. I mean, it's not like I could take them home to meet my family without being embarrassed. There's a boyfriend type and a husband type, know what I mean?

Well that would make a lot of sense but for the fact that the article was written by a woman.

I'm guessing there's a little to the article if you happen to be *British*. I hardly think that many American men place that high a value on what their family thinks of the girl he wants to marry.

You're making a good point. That hot, sexy man or woman in their early 20's isn't gonna look like that forever. Looks change over time (regardless of botox and cosmetic surgery). So when you marry someone, there had better be more to the package than just pretty wrapping paper and a fancy bow. You need to love what's inside the box, not just the outer shell. Now granted, the inside might change also, but the outside changes no matter what.
