If you are signed up for automatic withdrawals or credit card billing - make sure you check your bank statements or credit card statements!

I haven't been over there since Dec. 17th, because my mom was here over Christmas and then I twisted my ankle last weekend, so I had no idea. I just ran into a friend in the store today who told me.

Check carefully - they sent me a collection notice 1 yr. after I had ended my membership saying I owed for the year. My contract period had ended and I sent a letter in writing ending my membership. They stopped billing my credit card, but the account stayed open and kept racking up charges and late fees. I never received a bill until the collection agency sent me something. What a mess that was to straighten out. Watch out!!

I drove by there last night and it was pitch black. I figured they had an issue they were working on last night, like heat or a power outage or something to that effect. Freaken great, would've been nice if they had notified their members! Thanks for the heads up, now I have to find a new local gym with a babysitting service. Ugh!

They didn't even inform the staff from what I understand. They showed up to work and there was a sign on the door stating that they would be closing within just a few days. I had bought tanning sessions the day before the sign went up, and was told by a manager that they could credit me only as a bank transaction (or something like that) because she wasn't able to do the credit on the machine in the gym. I knew I'd never see that $35 again (and haven't). I keep meaning to call my credit union about it. I'm ticked about the whole thing, and the only other option seems to be World Gym.

Oh that's real nice.

Hubby goes to the World Gym, it can get packed at times which is one of the reasons I really liked TFFW. I'll have to ask him if it has a daycare, don't even know. There's also Snap Fitness near the Food Lion, we used to go there. It's a no frills gym (no classes, not even any staff half the time) but it's open 24 hours. As a female working out alone, I wouldn't go there alone during the hours it isn't staffed. But hubby and I used to go when he got off work at 10pm, which was great for us. Never more than 4 other people in there besides us. Now with the baby.....no can do.

I'm ticked about the whole thing, and the only other option seems to be World Gym.

I have a friend who goes to the World Gym and she likes it. I only chose TTFW because I liked the aerobics classes they offered for women and it was for only women. But it sounds like World Gym is offering the classes, too. It's just as close to me as the other one is - I live around the corner.

I've made too much progress at the gym to give it up - so as soon as I get the go ahead about my ankle - then I'll be going to sign up @ WG. I'm hoping I can at least do low impact aerobics (at the very least!) and upper body weights, too.

I know someone who belonged to TFFW, read the below sign and called World Gym. They told her in no way shape or form were they affiliated with TFFW, nor did they join forces. They were, however, offering a special rate to TFFW members.

:yay:
I took a picture of the sign - and typed it verbatim. It doesn't really say they are affiliated, though, so anyone calling about it shouldn't put it that way.

It simply says if you have a TFFW Membership Tag and bring it to WG - you get a special rate.

Seems that is a common thing with gyms. They just shutter the doors one day and stiff people out of their dues. wonder why.

They keep taking the money coming in from the members' monthly fees and use it until the bitter end. As for anyone with contracts which haven't expired - they will be out money.

In TTFW's case - I don't know how many contracts were going to expire after December 31. I personally am not out any money, unless they deduct something THIS month. I joined in August on an "introductory offer" deal which ended December 31, 2009. I think all of the contracts written since the summer were similar to mine and expired at the end of the year.

My contract was the same way. Joined in June, paid through 12/31 and they were to start deducting monthly in January. So far, they haven't taken anything but I'll be watching my account closely. Hubby is gonna ask how much the monthly dues are for me at World Gym tonight, he's almost there now. I wonder if it's any cheaper being a former tffw member than it would be under a family plan? Guess I'll find out in an hour or so.

1 year contract - $30/month, $25 fee
2 year contract - $25/month, $25 fee

Guess I'll go see how busy the childcare room is. I loved the childcare staff at TFFW. My son is only 9 months old and crawling, doesn't like to sit still. I'll have to see if the staff can accommodate him, he's no longer happy just sleeping in his carrier nor is he able to entertain himself for long. Basically, he's at a pita age in a childcare type setting.

I may be stuck here at the house on my elliptical. Can't wait for spring so I can get my exercise outdoors.

So that's the deal for the previous TTFW members? It's not a bad deal, really.

I have a friend who signs up for 3 months at a time. I guess that's probably not available for previous TTFW members.

I'm going to call or go over there soon - if I have time tomorrow, or maybe Friday.

Yeah, the rate isn't bad but I'm not sure if it's less than what anyone else would pay. That's the same rate hubby got when he signed up 6 months ago.

Anyway he likes it a lot there, says the equipment is really good and it's very clean. If he didn't work so many hours, I'd just go and leave him here with the baby. But that's not an option because they close at 10. Oh well, let me know what you think if you check it out. I'll do the same. Maybe you'll find your J-Lo class there too! :killingme

I guess World Gym has achieved their goal of putting all the gyms out of business. Whats gonna happen when another franchise gym opens in the area?

Total fitness

Hello all,

I'm a reporter for the Calvert Recorder looking into the sudden closing of Total Fitness. If you're a customer (or former worker) and would be willing to talk to me, please let me know at 301-764-2851 or emitrano@somdnews.com.

I'd also be grateful if anyone has names or contact information for executives there -- so far I only have the name of Gayle Soper, and haven't been able to reach her.

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Erica Mitrano
